Utah State men's basketball (11-3, 1-1) will continue Mountain West play this week with a road game at Nevada (7-8, 2-0) on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. (MT). USU is 32-14 all-time against the Wolf Pack, including a 13-11 road record.
L, 72-73 --- at Air Force
W, 86-67 --- SAN JOSÉ STATE
Utah State posted a 1-1 Mountain West record last week with a 73-72 road loss at Air Force, followed by an 86-67 home win against San José State. Against the Falcons, senior guard Preston Medlin scored 19 points, senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield scored 16 points, freshman forward Jalen Moore scored a career-high 14 points, and sophomore forward Kyle Davis recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. USU finished the game shooting 48.2 percent (27-56), including 37.0 percent from three-point range (10-27) and 72.7 percent at the free throw line (8-11). AFA shot 51.1 percent (24-47), including 37.5 percent from behind the arc (6-16) and 79.2 percent at the charity stripe (19-24). Against the Spartans, senior guard TeNale Roland scored a career-high 20 points, while Davis added his third double-double in as many games with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Medlin added 15 points and tied his career-high with eight assists, while Butterfield scored 14 points and Moore added 10 points. USU finished the game shooting 52.7 percent (29-55), including a season-high 71.4 percent from three-point range (10-14) and 75.0 percent at the free throw line (18-24). SJSU shot 42.1 percent (24-57), including 42.9 percent from behind the arc (15-35) and 66.7 percent at the line (4-6).

Utah State gymnastics (0-0, 0-0) begins its 2014 season under first-year head coach Nadalie Walsh on Saturday, Jan. 11 in a dual-meet at Iowa at 4 p.m. (MT). USU returns 12 letterwinners from last year, while bringing in four freshmen and three transfer athletes. Last season, the Aggies finished with a 5-14 overall record and an 0-5 Western Athletic Conference mark. Utah State placed fourth at the 2013 WAC Championships and three Aggies competed at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around.

Utah State opened Mountain West play with a 2-0 record last week as it posted an 88-78 home win against Air Force and a 78-65 road win at San José State. Against the Falcons, freshman guard Shelby Cloninger scored a career-high 21 points and senior guard Jennifer Schlott posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 assists. Junior center Franny Vaaulu added 14 points and junior guard Elise Nelson scored a career-high tying 11 points. USU finished the game shooting 43.2 percent (35-81), including 42.1 percent from three-point range (8-19) and 66.7 percent at the free throw line (10-15). AFA shot 43.1 percent (28-65), including 53.6 percent from behind the arc (15-28) and 63.6 percent at the charity stripe (7-11). Against the Spartans, Schlott scored 18 points, while Nelson scored 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists. Vaaulu added 12 points and sophomore forward Stephanie Bairstow scored a career-high 10 points. USU finished the game shooting 43.8 percent (32-73), including 35.7 percent from three-point range (5-14) and 52.9 percent at the free throw line (9-17). SJSU shot just 29.9 percent (20-67), including 36.0 percent from three (9-25) and 55.2 percent at the line (16-29).

Utah State men's tennis (0-0, 0-0) will begin its 2014 season with a dual match at BYU on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 12 p.m. USU played in four open tournaments during the fall season and was led by senior Andrew Whiting who had a 6-3 singles record, including a tournament win at the Utah Intercollegiate. Freshman Sebastian Schneider finished the fall season with a 5-2 singles record to go along with a tournament win at the Dar Walters Tennis Classic hosted by Boise State. Other Aggies who competed in the fall included seniors Fredrik Peterson and Matt Thatcher, juniors Curran Wearmouth, Matt Sweet and Sean Levesque, and freshmen Dylan Harlow, Dennis Baumgartner and Tomas Cosmai.
