LOGAN, Utah - The following is comments from select Utah State University Athletics Department personnel regarding the Mountain West Conference and its announcement Tuesday that it is not looking to expand.
Utah State Athletics Director Scott Barnes:
"Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson contacted me this afternoon following the conclusion of the league's Board of Director meetings and stated that they decided to stay at their current number of 10 football playing schools and nine comprehensive institutions. Utah State University will continue its efforts to strengthen the Western Athletic Conference going forward and we will go to work on further evaluating whether or not to expand. The landscape will continue to change and all of us need to be aware of that. In the meantime, our attention must remain on building strong programs that provide an excellent experience for our student-athletes.."
Utah State Head Men's Basketball Coach Stew Morrill:
"The decision by the Mountain West Conference to halt expansion at this time is certainly disappointing for all Aggie fans. As the saying goes, `it is what it is', and now we must go forward with renewed energy and commitment. All the positives of Utah State remain in place! It's up to all the schools in the WAC to make it a viable conference. We will continue to recruit quality student-athletes that the community and state can be proud of. As coaches, we should expect to compete at a high level and look forward, not back!"
Utah State Head Women's Basketball Coach Raegan Pebley:
"When one door closes another door opens and this is a great opportunity for us to know where we're at and be able to continue to move forward. The Mountain West Conference would have been a great opportunity, but so is the WAC."
