MEN'S BASKETBALL

• Utah State men's basketball (12-7, 2-5) will continue Mountain West play this week with a home game against New Mexico (15-4, 6-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU, and a road game at Wyoming (13-6, 4-2) on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. on ROOT Sports (Comcast Ch. 52/693HD, Dish Network Ch. 414, DirecTV Ch. 683). USU is 19-4 all-time against the Lobos including a 5-0 home record, and 23-44 all-time against the Cowboys including a 6-26 road record.

• Utah State dropped a pair of Mountain West games last week with a 62-42 loss at UNLV and a 74-69 overtime home loss to No. 7 San Diego State. Against the Rebels, senior center Jarred Shaw was the only Aggie to score in double-figures as he had 14 points to go along with eight rebounds. USU finished the game shooting a season-low 30.8 percent (16-52), including a season-low 11.8 percent from three-point range (2-17) and 80.0 percent at the free throw line (8-10). Against the Aztecs, senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield scored 19 points, freshman forward Jalen Moore scored a career-high 16 points and senior guard Preston Medlin added 12 points. USU finished the game shooting 52.7 percent (29-55), including 50.0 percent from three-point range (9-18), but a season-low 28.6 percent at the free throw line (2-7). SDSU shot 41.7 percent (25-60), including 26.7 percent from three (4-15) and 69.0 percent at the line (20-29).

• Utah State gymnastics (3-3) continues its 2014 season with a tri-meet at Air Force and versus Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m.

Last Week
W, 193.200-192.900 --- BYU
4th, 194.400 --- at UC Davis/vs. Stanford/vs. San José State
• Utah State posted a 1-3 record last week with a 193.200-192.900 home win against BYU, followed by a fourth-place finish at the UC Davis hosted quad meet along with No. 12 Stanford and San José State as USU scored a season-high 194.400 as compared to a 197.275 for Stanford, a 195.875 for UC Davis and a 195.400 for SJSU. Against the Cougars, sophomore Miranda Kerr claimed the vault title with a 9.825, sophomore McKinzey Martinez finished first on bars with a 9.825 and freshman Bailey McIntire tied for the first on the floor with a 9.800, and was second in the all-around with a 38.300. Overall, USU finished the night scoring a 48.850 on vault, 48.725 on bars, 46.950 on beam and 48.675 on floor for its winning overall score of 193.200. At the UC Davis hosted quad meet, McIntire finished sixth in the all-around with a 37.875, while Jones tied for first on the vault with a career-high 9.925, which ranks tied for the fourth-best vault score in school history. Sophomore Miranda Kerr tied for third-place on vault with her career-high 9.900. USU finished the meet scoring a 49.275 on vault, the second-highest score in program history, to go along with a 48.775 on bars, 48.025 on beam and 48.325 on floor for its overall score of 194.400.

• Utah State women's basketball (8-10, 2-5) will continue Mountain West play this week with a road game at New Mexico (7-11, 2-5) on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m., and a home game against Wyoming (12-5, 3-3) on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. USU is 3-9 all-time against the Lobos and 5-14 all-time against the Cowgirls.

• Utah State dropped a pair of Mountain West games last week with a 73-67 home loss to UNLV and an 88-72 road loss at San Diego State. Against the Rebels, senior guard Jennifer Schlott scored 24 points and junior center Franny Vaaulu added 17 points, while sophomore guard/forward Stephanie Bairstow grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds. USU finished the game shooting 39.7 percent (27-68), 0.0 percent from three-point range (0-12) and 76.5 percent from the free throw line (13-17). UNLV shot 44.4 percent (24-54), including 50.0 percent from three (8-16) and 68.0 percent at the line (17-25). Against the Aztecs, Schlott had 25 points. USU finished the game shooting 43.9 percent (29-66), including 27.8 percent from three (5-18) and 75.0 percent at the line (9-12). SDSU shot 50.0 percent overall (31-62), including 46.2 percent from three (6-13) and 69.0 percent at the line (20-29).

• Utah State men's tennis (1-3, 0-0) will continue its 2014 season this week with a pair of home matches against Montana and Montana State on Friday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 2, respectively, with both matches beginning at 11 a.m.

• Utah State posted a 1-2 record last week with a 5-2 home win against Idaho State, followed by a 4-0 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and a 4-3 loss at New Mexico State. Against the Bengals, freshman Dennis Baumgartner won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-3), junior Matt Sweet won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-4), senior Andrew Whiting won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-2), and freshman Tomas Cosmai won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-3). USU also won the doubles point as senior Fredrik Peterson teamed with junior Marcus Fritz for a 6-4 win at the first position, while Sweet and Whiting posted a 6-5 win at the second position, and Baumgartner teamed with junior Curran Wearmouth for a 6-5 win at the third position. Against NMSU, junior Sean Levesque posted a straight sets win at No. 5 singles (6-5, 6-5) and Cosmai won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-4). USU also won the doubles point against NMSU as Whiting and Sweet teamed up for a 6-5 win at the second position, while Baumgartner and Levesque posted a 6-3 win at the third position.

• Utah State women's tennis (0-0, 0-0) will begin its 2014 season this weekend with three matches as it plays at Chicago State on Friday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. (MT), followed by neutral site matches against South Dakota on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. (MT) and against Valparaiso on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. (MT). USU competed in three open tournaments during the fall season, and after a run to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Tournament, the duo of junior McKenzie Davis and sophomore Kallie Sperry was ranked sixth in the ITA preseason Mountain Region doubles rankings. The two team captains finished the fall with a 6-2 record to lead the Aggies. Freshman Lexi Turley ended the fall with a 5-3 singles record, while fellow freshman Katie Sweet posted a 3-2 record, including a run to the finals of her flight at the Boise State hosted Jack Taylor Classic. The Aggies also saw contributions from sophomores Amber Stuhlmann and Ashley Stuhlmann and freshman Cassidy Branstine.

• Utah State's indoor track & field teams will continue its 2014 season at the New Mexico hosted Team Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 1.

• Utah State junior Chari Hawkins set a school-record and the sixth-best mark in the country in the pentathlon with 3,965 points at the New Mexico hosted Cherry & Silver Invitational last weekend, while freshman Bradford Strobell placed fourth in the heptathlon with 4,096 points. At the Boise State hosted Jacksons Invitational, junior Nic Bowens won the 60m (6.76) and the 200m (21.47), while senior Silas Pimentel finished two spots behind Bowens in the 60m finishing third with a time of 6.90. Sophomore Cole Lambourne added a second-place finish in the 400m (47.53) and junior Travis Johnson chipped in with a second-place finish of his own in the triple jump (14.53m/47-08.00), while sophomore Parker Bluth placed third in the 200m with a time of 21.61. USU's distance medley team, made up of freshman Austin Orr, sophomores Briton Page and Spencer Russell and senior Eric Shellhorn, placed first with a time of 10:14.47. On the women's side, junior Rachel Orr took second in the high jump with a jump of 1.75m (5-08.75) and fellow junior Heather Simpson placed third in the 600m with a time of 1:39.37. Senior Keeley Eldredge led the way with a third-place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 18.05m (59-02.75). Additionally, USU's women's distance medley team, consisting of senior Alex Litzsinger, freshmen Tori Parkinson and Cierra Simmons and junior Brittany Bushman, took third with a time of 12:02.55.
