MEN'S BASKETBALL

• Utah State men's basketball (12-12, 4-5) continues Western Athletic Conference play this week with a pair of home games against Louisiana Tech (11-12, 3-5) on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., and against New Mexico State (17-7, 6-2) on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. The game against LTU will be televised live on Altitude 2, while its game against NMSU will be televised live nationally on ESPN2. USU is 13-2 all-time against the Bulldogs including a 6-0 record at home, and 35-28 all-time against the Southern Aggies including a 22-7 record at home.

• Utah State went 0-2 last week as it lost a pair of road games at Nevada (53-52) and at Fresno State (60-54). Against the Wolf Pack, sophomore guard Preston Medlin had 15 points and senior point guard Brockeith Pane added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists, while junior forward Kyisean Reed had eight points to go along with a career-high tying 10 rebounds. USU finished the game shooting 40.4 percent (23-57), including 35.7 percent from three-point range (5-14) and just 25.0 percent from the free throw line (1-4). UN shot 37.5 percent overall (18-48), including 33.3 percent from three (8-24) and 60.0 percent at the line (9-15). USU also out-rebounded UN by 16 (43-27). Against the Bulldogs, senior forward Morgan Grim had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Medlin scored 13 points and Pane added 11. USU shot 41.7 percent in the game (20-48), including 22.2 percent from behind the arc (4-18) and a season-best 90.9 percent at the charity stripe (10-11). FS shot 38.9 percent (21-54), including 33.3 percent from three-point range (5-15), and 76.5 percent at the free throw line (13-17). USU also out-rebounded FS by 16 (40-24).

• Utah State's softball team (0-0) will begin its 2012 season on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Georgia hosted Red and Black Showcase against North Carolina State at 9 a.m. (MT), and will then play Army at 1 p.m. (MT). On Saturday, Utah State will play St. John's and host Georgia at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. (MT), respectively, and conclude the tournament on Sunday against Campbell at 7 a.m. (MT). USU, who is picked to finish eighth in the WAC this year, return six starters from last year's team that ended the season 15-42 and 8-13 in conference play. Leading the way for USU this spring is sophomores Allison Lenzora (infield) and Kassy Uchida (utility) who were both named to the 16-member preseason all-WAC team.

• Utah State women's basketball (15-6, 6-1) continues Western Athletic Conference play this week with a pair of home games against Louisiana Tech (11-11, 4-3) on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m., and against New Mexico State (5-17, 2-5) on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. (MT). The game against NMSU will be televised live on KMYU-TV. USU is 2-12 all-time against the Lady Techsters and 14-18 all-time against NMSU.

• Utah State posted a 2-0 road record last week with wins at San Jose State (78-73) and at Hawai'i (69-55). Against the Spartans, senior forward Ashlee Brown recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 30 points and 14 rebounds, while junior guard Devyn Christensen scored 17 points and senior forward Maddy Plunkett added 13 points. USU finished the game shooting 36.9 percent overall (24-65), including 31.8 percent from three-point range (7-22) and 62.2 percent at the free throw line (23-37). SJSU shot 51.9 percent for the game (28-54), including 60.0 percent from three-point range (6-10) and 78.6 percent at the free throw line (11-14). Against the Rainbow Wahine, Christensen scored 25 points and senior guard Brooke Jackson added 16 points, while Brown and Plunkett each scored 11. USU shot 40.7 percent (24-59), including 50.0 percent from three (9-18) and 70.6 percent at the line (12-17). UH shot 32.8 percent overall (19-58), including 20.0 percent from three-point range (3-15) and 66.7 percent at the free throw line (14-21).

• Utah State gymnastics (2-5, 0-1) continues its 2012 season on Friday, Feb. 10 when it hosts San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference match at 7 p.m.

L, 192.575-194.600 --- ARIZONA STATE
Rebecca Holliday tied for the bars title and was one of four floor performers to set or tie career-highs as Utah State notched a 192.575 while visiting Arizona State scored a 194.600 for the dual win last weekend. Utah State scored a 48.075 on vault, a 48.325 on bars, a 47.825 on beam and a 48.350 on floor, for the final score of 192.575. USU's beam and floor scores were its second-highest marks of the season on the respective apparatus. Holliday tied for the bars title with a 9.800, and the Aggie senior tied her career-high on floor with a 9.800, tying for fifth. She finished behind teammates sophomore Paige Jones, who matched her career-best with a 9.850 on floor to place second, while freshman Sarah Landes also equalled her top score of her career with a 9.825, tying for third on floor. Freshman Susie Miller also posted a new career-high on the floor with a 9.775, placing seventh. Landes notched a 39.000 in the all-around, finishing third while recording her second-straight score of 39.000 or higher. Jones placed fourth in the all-around with a 37.400.

• Utah State's indoor track and field teams will continue its 2012 season on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11 when it travels to Seattle, Wash., to compete in the Husky Classic.

• With five event titles as part of 24 top-five finishes, the Utah State men and women's track and field teams competed well at Jacksons Indoor Track for the Boise State Bronco Classic last weekend. Collecting wins for the USU women were freshman Rachel Orr in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m (5-07.00), sophomore Sam Nielson in the triple jump with a mark of 11.91m (39-01.00), senior Spela Hus in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 14.78m (48-06.00) and junior Bailee Whitworth leading a 1-2-3 Aggie finish in the 200m (24.32) along with fellow junior Aubrie Haymore (2nd, 24.75) and senior Katelyn Heiner (tied for 3rd, 24.81). It was the third week in a row for Hus to win the shot put, while Orr and Nielson captured their event titles for the second-straight week. With a Western Athletic Conference season-best time in the 60m dash (6.85), sophomore Silas Pimentel claimed the Aggie men's only first-place honor with freshman Nic Bowens close behind in second with a time of 6.90. Pimentel also placed third in the 200m (21.67). Other top five finishers for the Utah State women included senior Sonia Grabowska in the pole vault as she cleared 4.11m (13-05.75) to take second-place, while fellow senior Julia Stewart garnered second-place in the triple jump with a mark of 11.47m (37-07.75). Heiner also placed second in the long jump [5.61m (18-05.00)] while Whitworth added a fourth-place finish in the 60m dash (7.71). Freshman Mariah Thompson and junior Amber Thompson each earned fourth-place in the high jump [1.60m (5-03.00)] and pole vault [3.80m (12-05.00)], respectively. Senior Lindsey Spencer and sophomore Keeley Eldredge finished fourth and fifth in the weight throw with tosses of 16.61m (54-06.00) and 16.53m (54-02.75), respectively. For the USU men, junior Eric Follett and senior Damian Szade captured third-place in the high jump [1.99m (6-06.25)] and long jump [6.88m (22-07.00)], respectively, and sophomore Bryce Hall collected third-place in the weight throw with a toss of 17.31m (56-09.50). Sophomore AJ Boully crossed the finish line in the 60m hurdles in a fourth-place time of 8.28, while fellow sophomore Devin Lang claimed fifth in the 800m (1:56.14). In the men's pole vault, junior Jon Goble and freshman Jason Allred each cleared 4.40m (14-05.25) to claim fourth and fifth, respectively, on a judges decision.

• Utah State posted a 1-1 home record last week as it lost to Montana State (4-3) and defeated Portland State (6-1). Against the Bobcats, freshman Marcus Fritz posted a straight sets win at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-2) and junior Lenny Whiting recorded a three sets win at No. 5 singles (7-6, 4-6, 6-1). USU also won the doubles point as Fritz teamed with junior Sven Poslusny for an 8-2 win at the first position, and senior Nate Ballam teamed with freshman Matt Sweet for an 8-3 win at the third position. Against the Vikings, Poslusny won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-4), Fritz won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-3), Whiting won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-4, 7-5), Ballam won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-4), and sophomore Brandon Nielsen won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-3). USU also won the doubles point as Poslusny and Fritz posted an 8-3 win at the first position, Whiting teamed with sophomore Andrew Whiting for an 8-3 win at the second position, and Ballam and Sweet recorded an 8-6 win at the third position.

Against the Wildcats, junior Jaci West posted a straight sets win at No.1 singles (6-2, 6-0), freshman McKenzie Davis won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-1), junior Romina Nedakovic won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-2), and senior Monica Abella won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-0). USU also won the doubles point as West and Davis won at the first doubles position (8-5), Nedakovic teamed with junior Kristina Voytsekhovich for an 8-0 win at the second doubles position, and Abella teamed with senior Brianna Rowland for an 8-7 win at the third doubles position. Against the Lobos, Davis won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-2) and Nedakovic won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-4). USU also won the doubles point as West and Davis notched an 8-2 win at the first position, Nedakovic and Voytsekhovich notched an 8-7 win at the second position, and Rowland and junior Julie Tukuafu posted an 8-4 win at the third position. Against the Bobcats, West won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-3), Davis won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (7-5, 6-1), Voytsekovich posted a three sets win at No. 3 singles (6-1, 2-6, 6-2), Nedakovic won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-3), and Rowland won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-2, 7-5). USU also won the doubles point as West and Davis recorded an 8-4 win at the first position, while Voytsekovich and Nedakovic notched an 8-5 win at the second position.
