USU Student-Athletes Collected Approximately $5,000 For Haiti Saturday

Feb. 8, 2010

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), spearheaded a group of roughly 50 current USU student-athletes and members of the USU student group the HURD, collected donations for the victims of the Haiti earthquake on Saturday during the two USU basketball games in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum this weekend, and the group collected approximately $5,000.

Student-athletes took collections in the crowd and had tables set up on the concourse collecting donations during the USU women's game against Louisiana Tech and the Aggie men's game against Nevada.

"It was great to see all the people donating money, especially the kids," said Stacey Howard, USU women's basketball representative for SAAC. "We were honored to help raise funds for the awful tragedy and support this great cause."

SAAC serves as the voice of Utah State student-athletes. The committee is comprised of student-athletes from each sport whose role is to create a unified voice to promote communication between all student-athletes, athletics administration, USU faculty and staff, the Western Athletic Conference and the NCAA. One of the main goals of SAAC is to reach out to the community through volunteer work of all sorts. SAAC is also responsible for educating student-athletes on legislative issues and strives to create and foster a network of athlete-to-athlete support and provide leadership and learning opportunities for its members.
