Shawn Daniels Named USU Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - - Utah State basketball player Shawn Daniels was voted USU's athlete of the week by the local media panel, it was announced today.

Daniels, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., led Utah State in scoring in both of its wins this past week over UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton. Against the Anteaters, Daniels went 9-of-10 from the field and scored a game-high 18 points, to go along with eight rebounds. No. 5 continued his hot shooting against the Titans, connecting on 6-of-7 shots from the floor for 16 points. Daniels also had six rebounds, three blocks and a season-high three steals vs. CSF. Defensively, Daniels held UCI's Ben Jones to 1-of-5 shooting and just three points. Two nights later, Daniels held Fullerton's Babacar Camara to 1-of-8 shooting and only two points. Overall, Daniels shot 88.2 percent from the field during the week and averaged 17 points, seven boards, two blocks and two steals.

The Utah State basketball team is on the road for two games this week. The Aggies play UC Santa Barbara Thur., Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. and Long Beach State Sat., Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.

OTHER ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NOMINEES:

SOFTBALL: LISA SPENCER/ Freshman... was the star for the Aggies on the mound at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament this past weekend in Tempe, Ariz., where USU went 2-3. In its first game of the tourney on Friday, Utah State defeated Missouri 6-1 as Spencer pitched seven innings for the win. Against the Tigers, the right-hander gave up one earned run on seven hits, while walking two and striking out three in the process. Spencer picked up her second win of the year on Saturday as she pitched the Aggies to a 3-1 extra-inning victory over Georgia. Spencer threw eight solid innings, giving up just five hits and one earned run. She also struck out three Bulldogs and walked one. Spencer's lone loss of the tournament came on Sunday against Texas Tech, 6-4. Against the Red Raiders, Spencer allowed 10 hits and six runs (four earned), while striking out four and walking one.

GYMNASTICS: NICOLE KILPATRICK/ Sophomore... took second in the all-around (39.225) in Utah State's meet this past Saturday at Denver. Kilpatrick's highest score of the night came on the balance beam where she posted a 9.9. In the Aggies' meet at Utah on Feb. 6, Kilpatrick was the top all-around finisher for Utah State as she finished in third with a score of 38.425.

MEN'S TENNIS: ANDY MADERSBACHER/ Senior... was the closest Aggie to recording a win in the team's 7-0 loss at BYU on Thursday. At No. 1 singles, Madersbacher lost to Gert Vilms, 6-0, 7-6 (4).

MEN'S TRACK: DAVE HOFFMAN/ Senior... was the only Aggie to finish in first place this past weekend at the Wildcat Invitational in Ogden. Hoffman took first in the high jump with a mark of 6-10.

WOMEN'S TRACK: CANDICE WORKMAN/ Freshman... finished in first place for the third time this season in shot put at the Wildcat Invitational. Workman also finished first in weight throw.
