WEEKLY AGGIE UPDATE - FEBRUARY 15, 2009 MEN'S BASKETBALL This Week Utah State's men's basketball team (24-2, 12-1) will play a pair of non-conference games this week as it hosts Cal State Bakersfield (6-18) on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m., and plays at Saint Mary's (20-5) on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. (MT). The game against the Gaels is part of the ESPNU BracketBusters and will be televised live on ESPN2. USU is 3-0 all-time against CSUB and 4-1 all-time against Saint Mary's. Last Week Utah State went 1-1 last week on the road as it defeated Idaho (62-53) and lost at Boise State (66-56), snapping its 19-game overall winning streak and 16-game WAC winning streak. Against the Vandals, senior forward Gary Wilkinson recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Jared Quayle had 12 points and six rebounds. USU shot just 40.5 percent from the field (17-42), 43.8 percent from three-point range (7-16) and 77.8 percent from the free throw line (21-27). Idaho shot 36.4 percent overall (16-44), including 41.2 percent from behind the arc (7-17), and 70.0 percent from the free throw line (14-20). USU also dominated the glass as it out-rebounded UI, 40-21. Against the Broncos, Wilkinson led USU with 12 points and six rebounds, while Quayle had 12 points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Pooh Williams also scored in double-figures as he had 10 points. USU shot a season-low 36.5 percent in the game (19-52) and committed 19 turnovers. The Aggies also shot 33.3 percent from three-point range (5-15) and 61.9 percent from the free throw line (13-21). BSU shot 41.8 percent overall (23-55), including 27.8 percent from behind the arc (5-18), and 75.0 percent from the free throw line (15-20). USU out-rebounded BSU, 38-32. On the season, USU is averaging 71.7 points and shooting 49.7 percent from the field, 38.7 percent from three-point range, and 73.4 percent from the free throw line. The Aggies are led by Wilkinson who is averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds, while shooting 60.1 percent from the field and 84.4 percent from the free throw line.
MEN'S GOLF Next Competition Utah State's men's golf team will continue its 2009 spring season on Monday, Mar. 2 at the Braveheart Classic hosted by UC Riverside. Last Week Utah State finished in 11th-place out of 14 team at the fifth annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah last week as the Aggies finished the two-day, 36-hole tournament with a 42-over par 618 (318-300). Senior Tyler Labrum led Utah State with rounds of 77 and 73 to tie for 16th overall with a six-over par 150. Sophomore Benjamin Schilleman finished tied for 27th at eight-over 152 as he carded rounds of 79 and 73, and junior Thad Truman tied for 56th with a 36-hole score of 157 with rounds of 79 and 78. Seniors Devin Daniels and Toph Peterson also competed for USU and finished tied for 80th and 82nd, respectively, with scores of 163 (87-76) and 164 (83-81).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL This Week Utah State's women's basketball team (11-12, 5-5) will play a pair of Western Athletic Conference games this weekend as it plays at Boise State (14-10, 7-3) on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m., and hosts Idaho (10-11, 7-3) on Sunday, Feb. 22. USU is 3-14 all-time against the Broncos and 3-11 all-time against the Vandals. Last Competition Utah State won its only game of the week, 63-52 at Nevada Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Danyelle Snelgro led the way for USU by scoring a career-high 29 points to go along with four assists, three steals and three rebounds. Snelgro was 9-of-19 from the field, 2-of-4 from three-point range, and 9-of-11 from the free throw line against the Wolf Pack. Sophomore guard Alice Coddington had a career-high 15 rebounds for USU, while junior forward Lydia Whitehead finished the game with nine points and four boards. USU shot 35.8 percent from the field (19-53), 33.3 percent from three-point range (4-12), and 70.0 percent from the free throw line (21-30). UN shot 29.1 percent overall (16-55), including 28.6 percent from behind the arc (2-7), and 62.1 percent from the free throw line (18-29). Overall, USU is averaging 57.7 points on the season and shooting 38.8 percent from the field, 31.2 percent from three-point range, and 63.9 percent from the free throw line, while Snelgro leads the team with 13.6 points per game.
GYMNASTICS This Week Utah State's gymnastics team (0-6, 0-3) will travel to Provo, Utah this Friday, Feb. 20 to compete in a quad meet with BYU, San Jose State and Boise State at 7 p.m. Last Week Utah State posted its second-best score of the season, losing to top-ranked Utah, 196.950-193.500, at home last Monday. USU's 48.925 on floor was its season-best on the apparatus. The Aggies had their second-best score of the season on bars with a 48.825, while their 48.200 on vault and 47.550 on beam were their third-best scores of the year in the respective events. The 193.500 team total was .1 shy of the season-best 193.600 set at Boise State on Jan. 30. The Utes tallied their 196.950 with a 48.925 on floor, a 49.300 vault score, a 49.350 on beam, and a bars score of 48.375. Utah's All-American Kristina Baskett swept all four individual titles in winning the all-around with a 39.675, leading a 1-2-3 finish by the Utes in the all-around. USU junior Heather Heinrich was fourth with a 38.350 while sophomore Lyndsie Boone and senior Nicki Felley tied for fifth with a 38.050. Sophomore Jackie Dillon, Heinrich and redshirt-freshman Erica Huelsmann were USU's highest individual finishers, all tallying 9.825's on floor to finish in a three-way tie for third. Dillon tied her season-high while Huelsmann set a new personal-best. Sophomore Nicole Simoneau matched her teammates by tying for third on bars with a 9.875. Freshman Brandie Dickson tied her career-best with a 9.775, finishing sixth. INDOOR TRACK & FIELD Next Week Utah State's men's and women's indoor track and field teams will take the week off as it prepares for the 2009 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships which begins on Thursday, Feb. 26 in Boise, Idaho. USU's men's team is the defending indoor WAC Champions, while the USU women finished fourth at last year's event. Last Week Utah State men's and women's track teams were split at three different locations last weekend including the Air Force Invitational, the Boise State Invitational and the Washington Husky Classic. USU's distance team showed great improvement at the Husky Classic, as every Aggie runner set a new PR in their respective events. At the Husky Invitational, junior Erin Stratton came in 25th place in the mile, clocking in at 4:52.40, setting a new PR and the fastest in the WAC to date. Stratton's time is also the fifth-fastest in USU school history. Senior Allison Taylor (5:01.90) and freshman Jessie Chugg (5:01.94) finished 50th and 51st, respectively, and also both setting new PR's. In the 3,000m, freshman Ruth Hilton (9:59.48) and sophomore Kim Quinn (10:01.65) finished 47th and 51st, respectively, both setting new PR's as well. Hilton's time puts her at third in USU school history and Quinn is seventh in USU history. In the men's mile, junior Heath Wing finished 62nd with a time of 4:24.95, setting a new PR. In the 3,000m senior Steve Strickland finished 55th, clocking in at 8:20.55, setting a new PR and leading the WAC. Sophomore Chio Lopez placed 63rd with an 8:26.75 time, also setting a new PR and placing him in second on the WAC performance list. Senior Ben Kessen (8:33.87) placed 79th and set a new PR in the event as well as fourth-best in the conference. Freshman Daniel Howell was 83rd with an 8:35.62. At the Air Force Invitational, sophomore Sonia Grabowska took the title in the women's pole vault clearing 13-07.25 (4.15m). In the women's 60m hurdles junior Ashlee Cannon claimed second-place with a time of 8.55, setting a new career best and putting her in third-place in the WAC standings. Junior Heidi Hopkins also set a new PR in the event clocking in at 8.92. Cannon also placed fifth in the 200m at 25.18, setting a new PR as well. Junior Elaine Connolly set a new PR in the women's 400m running a 56.00, and placing second in the event. Sophomore Katelyn Jensen finished sixth at 57.14. In the 60m dash, junior Kimiko Kamo set a new season best running it in 7.92. Sophomore Maria Halton was 14th with a 7.98, after a running a personal-best 7.88 Friday in the prelims. The Aggie men had four of the top five spots in the men's 60m hurdles, going second through sixth. Leading the pack was junior Dylan Nielson finishing second at 8.11, while senior Nick Karren took third at 8.17, and seniors Keith Williams (8.20) and John Strang (8.27) took fourth and fifth, respectively, and both setting new PR's. In the men's 400m Karren finished fourth clocking in at 49.16. Sophomore James Allred (49.35) and Williams (49.83) finished sixth and seventh and both set new season records in the event. In the 60m, Strang finished third with a time of 6.91, a new season-best. Sophomore Blake Bolen also set a new PR in the event finishing at 6.94. In the women's shot put freshman Spela Hus finished in fifth-place with a distance of 45-11.75 (14.01m), while junior Shannon Prince finished in sixth-place at 45-01.00 (13.74m), a new PR. In the men's shot put, freshman Bryce Hall placed fifth in the event throwing 53-01.00 (16.18m). Senior Blake Hadfield came in 10th in the men's triple jump at 46-10.75 (14.29). In the long jump freshman Damian Szade placed seventh with a distance of 22-09.00 (6.93m). Hadfield followed placing ninth, 22-0.25 (6.89m). In the men's high jump sophomore Clint Silcock cleared 7-00.50 (2.15m) placing him second, matching his PR. Junior Casey Parker (6-10.75, 2.10m) and Strang (6-08.75, 2.05m) finished third and fifth, respectively. In the women's long jump sophomore Kimiko Kamo came in 12th place jumping 16-09.75 (5.12m), a new season best. In the high jump, senior Tara Pickett came in third, clearing 5-07.00 (1.70m) setting a new PR and tying her for third-best on the WAC performance list. At the Boise State Invitational freshman Sam Hawkins finished the 200m in 24.53 placing eighth in the event. Hawkins also ran the 60m hurdles in 9.96 a new season best. Junior Jake Maybe finished second in the pole vault clearing 14-03.25. In the men's mile, sophomores Brian McKenna (4:29.88) and Nick Bolinder (4:29.92) finished third and fourth, respectively, with Bolinder setting a new PR with the time.
SOFTBALL Next Competition Utah State's softball team (3-7) will take two weeks off before returning to action on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Diamond Devil Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. USU will play Southern Utah, Arizona State, Northern Colorado and South Alabama during the two-day event. Last Week Utah State went 1-4 last week at the Campbell Cartier Tournament hosted by San Diego State. USU began the tournament with a 3-1 loss to No. 24 San Diego State, and then defeated No. 24 UC Santa Barbara, 6-5. The Aggies concluded the tournament with losses to No. 10 Washington, 16-3, No. 24 Long Beach State, 8-0, and No. 8 Stanford, 9-5.
MEN'S TENNIS This Week Utah State's men's tennis team (3-3) will play a pair of matches in Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend against UC Riverside on Saturday, Feb. 21 and against UNLV on Sunday, Feb. 22. Last Week Utah State's men's tennis team posted a pair of home wins last weekend as it defeated Montana State-Billings, 7-0, and Northern Arizona, 5-2. Sophomore Bryan Marchant went 2-0 during the week at No. 3 singles with a pair of straight set wins, while senior Mike Banks went 2-0 at No. 4 singles. Junior Alex Thatcher went 2-0 at No. 5 singles and freshman Jordan Barlow went 2-0 at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Jakob Asplund and junior Amit Maharaj both went 1-1 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
WOMEN'S TENNIS This Week Utah State's women's tennis team (1-3) will play a pair of matches in Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend as it faces UNLV on Friday, Feb. 20 and Illinois State on Sunday, Feb. 22. Last Competition Utah State lost a pair of matches last week to No. 39 Boise State, 7-0, and to Colorado State, 6-1. Against the Rams, sophomore Hailey Swenson posted USU's only point as she defeated CSU's Laura Neal in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 10-5. Other Aggies to compete during the weekend include senior Bridgette Strickland, junior Britney Watts, sophomore Taylor Perry, and freshmen Monica Abella Calleja and Carla Limon. |
