Athletic Director Rance Pugmire Placed On Administrative Leave
Feb. 19, 2004
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State University Athletic Director Rance Pugmire has been placed on an administrative leave of absence for up to 60 days in connection with his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol over the weekend.
Utah State University President Kermit L. Hall, who was informed by Pugmire about the arrest on Monday, expressed his gratitude to Pugmire for his contributions to the athletic program and expects that he will be able to make a contribution in the future, "but there are issues that need to be raised before they can be addressed."
Accordingly, the two met on Wednesday and mutually agreed that the best course of action would be for Pugmire to take an administrative leave pending the outcome of the DUI case.
Fred H. Hunsaker, retired vice president of Administrative Services, will step in as acting athletic director in Pugmire's absence.
Hunsaker, who was asked Wednesday by Hall to take the helm during this interim period, said he "is willing to provide leadership and support to a very successful athletic program at this critical time in its growth and development." He said he will work to maintain stability in the department while issues involving Pugmire are being resolved.
Pugmire is in his fifth year as Director of Athletics at Utah State.
