• Utah State men's basketball (15-12, 5-10) will continue Mountain West play this week with road games at New Mexico (21-5, 12-2) on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., and at San José State (7-19, 1-13) on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 6 p.m. (MT). The game at UNM will be televised live on CBS Sports Network (Comcast Ch. 269/753HD, Dish Network Ch. 158, DirecTV Ch. 221) and its game at SJSU will be televised live on ROOT Sports (Comcast Ch. 52/693HD, Dish Network Ch. 414, DirecTV Ch. 683). USU is 19-5 all-time against the Lobos including a 5-1 known road record, and 52-21 all-time against the Spartans including a 16-13 road record.

• Utah State went 0-2 in Mountain West play last week with a 60-45 road loss at No. 5 San Diego State, followed by a 79-76 home loss to Fresno State. Against the Aztecs, senior center Jarred Shaw and senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield each scored 10 points. USU finished the game shooting 34.0 percent (17-50), including 38.5 percent from three-point range (5-13) and 66.7 percent at the free throw line (6-9). SDSU shot 43.1 percent (25-58), including 38.5 percent from behind the arc (5-13) and 55.6 percent at the charity stripe (5-9). Against the Bulldogs, Shaw had 18 points and sophomore forward Kyle Davis recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high tying 15 rebounds. Senior guard TeNale Roland added 12 points and Butterfield scored 10 points. USU finished the game shooting 50.8 percent (30-59), including 28.6 percent from three-point range (6-21) and 66.7 percent at the free throw line (10-15). FS shot 43.9 percent (29-66), including 47.8 percent from behind the arc (11-23) and was a perfect 10-for-10 at the charity stripe.

• Utah State gymnastics (6-7) continues its 2014 season with home meet against Sacramento State on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.

• Utah State went 0-1 last week with a 195.875-194.650 home loss to No. 18 Denver. USU notched a 48.475 on vault, 48.900 on bars, 48.100 on beam and a season-high 49.175 on floor, contributing to the 194.650 total. Denver registered a 49.000 on vault, 49.225 on bars, 48.825 on beam and a 48.825 on floor, contributing to its winning score of 195.875. Junior Sarah Landes finished second in the all-around with a 38.900, while freshman Bailey McIntire had the only event win for USU, claiming the floor title with a career-best 9.900. Senior Paige Jones tied for third on vault and bars, notching a 9.775 and 9.850, respectively, while Landes and freshman Charly Belliston tied for third on beam with scores of 9.800. Utah State had a season-best floor performance, notching a 49.175 as it swept the top three positions on floor, as McIntire took first, sophomore Miranda Kerr placed second with a 9.875 and Jones finished third with a 9.850.

• Utah State women's basketball (11-15, 5-10) will continue Mountain West play this week with a pair of home games against New Mexico (9-16, 4-10) on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m., and against San José State (10-15, 4-10) on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 7 p.m. USU is 4-9 all-time against the Lobos and 13-5 all-time against the Spartans.

• Utah State posted a 1-1 Mountain West record last week with a 79-69 home win against San Diego State, followed by a 72-70 road loss at Fresno State. Against the Aztecs, senior guard Jennifer Schlott scored 33 points, while sophomore guard Makenlee Williams had 19 points and junior center Franny Vaaulu added 12 points. USU finished the game shooting 41.9 percent (26-62), including 34.8 percent from three-point range (8-23) and 73.1 percent at the free throw line (19-26). SDSU shot 40.0 percent overall (26-65), including 33.3 percent from three (4-12) and 56.5 percent at the charity stripe (13-23). Against the Bulldogs, Schlott scored 30-plus points for the ninth time this year as she finished with 35 points. Williams had her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, sophomore guard Stephanie Bairstow scored 12 points, and junior guard Elise Nelson grabbed 10 rebounds. USU finished the game shooting 51.8 percent (29-56), including 21.4 percent from three-point range (3-14) and 75.0 percent at the free throw line. FS shot 38.1 percent (24-63), including 24.0 percent from behind the arc (6-25) and 78.3 percent at the line (18-23).

• Utah State posted a 2-0 record last week with home wins against Weber State (4-2) and Colorado Mesa (6-1). Against the Wildcats, junior Marcus Fritz won in three sets at No. 3 singles (5-7, 6-3, 7-5), junior Matt Sweet won in three sets at No. 4 singles (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), and freshman Sebastian Schneider won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-1). USU also claimed the doubles point as Schneider and Sweet notched an 8-5 win at the second position, while senior Andrew Whiting and junior Sean Levesque posted an 8-2 win at the third position. Against the Mavericks, freshman Dennis Baumgartner won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-3), Sweet won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (7-5, 6-1), Schneider won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-0), Levesque won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-1), and junior Curran Wearmouth won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-3). USU also claimed the doubles point as Baumgartner and Fritz posted an 8-4 win at the first position, Sweet and Schneider notched an 8-4 win at the second position, and Whiting teamed with freshman Dylan Harlow for an 8-6 win at the third position.

Against the Redhawks, junior McKenzie Davis won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), freshman Nini Guensler won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2), freshman Lexi Turley won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-2), freshman Cassidy Branstine won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2), and freshman Katie Sweet won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-4). USU also claimed the doubles point as Guensler and Turley posted an 8-2 win at the first position, Branstine teamed with sophomore Amber Stuhlmann for an 8-5 win at the second position, and Davis teamed with sophomore Ashley Stuhlmann for an 8-3 win at the third position. Against the Bulldogs, Davis won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-2, 7-5) and Guensler won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-4).

• Utah State's softball team (4-2) will continue its 2014 season on Friday, Feb. 28 at the San Diego Classic. USU will begin the tournament with two games on Friday, Feb. 28 as it plays the host Toreros at 5:30 p.m. (MT) and then faces Grand Canyon at 8 p.m. (MT). On Saturday, Mar. 1, USU will play Lehigh at 10 a.m. (MT) and Mississippi at 5:30 p.m. (MT). And on Sunday, Mar. 2, USU will conclude the tournament against Illinois-Chicago at 11 a.m. (MT).

• Sophomore pitcher Noelle Johnson helped Utah State to a 4-2 record at the Southern Utah hosted Red Desert Classic two weeks ago as USU posted wins against Southern Utah (8-0), East Carolina (12-3), UT Arlington (5-0) and Nebraska-Omaha (6-0), and lost to Idaho State (10-7) and Grand Canyon (5-3). Johnson's best game of the tournament was in the finale against UNO as she set a USU single game school record with 16 strikeouts in a two-hit shutout win over seven innings. Johnson started the tournament with a two-hit, five-inning shutout win against the Thunderbirds, before allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings in taking the loss against the Bengals. She then allowed one earned run on four hits in 5.0 innings of no decision work against the Lopes. Against the Pirates, she allowed two earned runs on five hits, while striking out six in five innings for the win. She then picked up her first save of the season against the UTA Mavericks as she pitched 4.0 innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out five batters. For the tournament, Johnson posted a 3-1 record to go along with one save as she struck out 40 batters, while allowing 22 hits and 10 earned runs over 29.1 innings for a 2.39 earned run average.

• Utah State's indoor track & field teams will continue its 2014 season this week as it travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the 2014 Mountain West Championships. The Aggie men finished third at last year's Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, while the Aggie women placed seventh.

• Juniors Nic Bowens and Chari Hawkins, and senior Keeley Eldredge all set school records for Utah State track & field at the New Mexico hosted Don Kirby Elite Collegiate Invitational two weeks ago. Bowens ran a 21.11 in the 200m to break his own school record and place seventh in the event and followed up that performance with a 6.68 in the 60m to best his own school record and finish sixth. Hawkins finished first and shattered the school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.40 and Eldredge blasted her own school record in the weight throw with a heave of 19.14m (62-09.50), good for ninth-place. Senior Bailee Whitworth took third in section C of the 60m dash with a time of 7.69 for the Aggie women. Other top-five performances for the Aggies included senior Silas Pimentel's (6.78) third-place finish in section B of the 60m dash and junior Eric Shellhorn's (4:08.81) fifth-place performance in the mile. The Aggies also competed over the weekend at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., and at the Boise State Team Challenge in Nampa, Idaho. At the Husky Classic, freshman Tori Parkinson was the top finisher for the Aggie women with a 10th-place performance in the 3,000m with a time of 9:55.83. Sophomore Spencer Russell led the way for the Utah State men in Seattle by placing 16th in the 800m with a time of 1:53.02. Utah State received a number of strong performances at the Boise State Team Challenge. Junior Chris Martinez led the way in Nampa by winning the 3,000m with a time of 8:38.61. Sophomore Tanner Hunt (49.66) and junior Travis Johnson (13.95m/45-09.25) finished second in the 400m and triple jump, respectively. Finishing fifth for the Aggies were freshmen Brett McAdams (4:24.65) and Mitchell Kalinin (4.47m/14-08.00) in the mile and pole vault, respectively. For the USU women, freshman Sydney Blair placed third in the 800m with a time of 2:17.44. Fellow freshman Bethani Talbot joined Blair in third position with a leap of 1.60m (5-03.00) in the high jump. The Aggie women also received a pair of fifth-place performances from freshman Morgan Monks (3.25,/10-08.00) in the pole vault and sophomore Karlee Deeter (5:14.59) in the mile.

• Utah State men's golf will continue its 2014 spring season on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 17-18 in Primm, Nev., at the South Dakota hosted Jackrabbit Spring Invitational.

• Utah State finished in sixth-place out of nine teams with a 60-over 924 (308-310-306) at the Cal State Fullerton hosted Folino Invitational last week. Senior Tanner Higham finished tied for ninth for USU with a 7-over 223 (76-74-73) for his fourth top 10 finish this year and the 10th of his career. Sophomore Seokwon Jeon finished tied for 34th with a 17-over 233 (78-77-77), while freshman Braxton Miller tied for 36th with a 19-over 235 (76-78-81). Sophomore Reed Platke finished in 38th-place with a 21-over 237 (78-83-76), and fellow sophomore Brennan Coburn tied for 41st with a 23-over 239 (79-80-80).
