• Utah State gymnastics (10-8) continues its 2014 season this weekend at the Mountain Rim Championships in Provo, Utah on Saturday, Mar. 22 at 7 p.m.

2nd, 196.000 --- at #7 UCLA/vs. Bowling Green
• Utah State posted a 2-1 dual record last week with a 196.000-195.550 win against 24th-ranked Southern Utah, followed by a second-place finish at a tri-meet hosted by No. 7 UCLA along with Bowling Green. Against the Thunderbirds, USU scored a 196.000 for the first time since 2004 which is tied for the seventh-best team score in school history. In the meet, USU notched a 49.125 on vault, a 48.925 on bars to match its season-best score, a season-high 48.875 on beam and a 49.075 on floor, contributing to the 196.000 total. SUU finished with a 48.775 on vault, a 48.950 on bars, a 49.050 on beam and a 48.775 on floor for a total of 195.550. Junior Sarah Landes finished third in the all-around with a 38.700, including a second-place finish on vault with a 9.875. Senior Paige Jones claimed the vault title with a 9.875, placed second on bars with a 9.850 and tied for fourth-place on floor with a 9.800. Freshman Charly Belliston tied for third on both bars and beam with a 9.825 on each event. And Landes, freshman Bailey McIntire and junior Susie Miller all shared the first-place spot on floor as they all notched a 9.850. In its tri-meet with UCLA and Bowling Green, USU notched a 49.075 on vault, a season-best 49.200 on bars, a 48.850 on beam and a 48.875 on floor. UCLA hit a 49.175 on vault, a 49.500 on bars, a 48.975 on beam and a 49.400 on floor for the 197.050 total. Bowling Green's third-place finish came with a 194.125, comprised of a 48.725 on vault, a 48.725 on bars, a 47.925 on beam and a 48.825 on floor. Landes finished third in the all-around with a 39.250, matching her season-high, including a fourth-place finish on bars with a career-high tying 9.875. Jones tied for third on vault with a 9.850, and sophomore Michelle Yasukochi tied for fourth on beam with a 9.825.

• Utah State men's basketball (18-14, 7-11) concluded its 2013-14 season with a 1-1 record at the Mountain West Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., last week as it posted a 73-69 win against ninth-seeded Colorado State, before losing to top-seeded San Diego State, 73-39, in the quarterfinals. Against the Rams, senior guard Preston Medlin scored 17 points, senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield scored 14 points, and senior guard TeNale Roland scored 14 points. USU finished the game shooting 40.0 percent (24-60), including 52.4 percent from three-point range (11-21) and 73.7 percent at the free throw line (14-19). CSU shot 42.9 percent (27-63), including 17.6 percent from behind the arc (3-17) and 66.7 percent at the line (12-18). Against the Aztecs, senior center Jarred Shaw scored 14 points. USU finished the game shooting 29.3 percent (12-41), including 10.0 percent from three-point range (1-10) and 66.7 percent at the free throw line (14-21). SDSU shot 52.5 percent (31-59), including 41.2 percent from three (7-17) and 57.1 percent at the line (4-7).

• Utah State posted a 1-2 record last week in Tucson, Ariz., as it lost at Arizona (4-3), lost to Fresno State (4-3) and defeated Saint Mary's (4-2). Against the Wildcats, junior Marcus Fritz won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (7-5, 7-6), junior Matt Sweet won in three sets at No. 4 singles (4-6, 7-6, 11-9), and freshman Sebastian Schneider won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-3, 6-1). Against the Bulldogs, freshman Dennis Baumgartner won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-4) and Fritz won in three sets at No. 2 singles (1-6, 6-1, 6-4). USU also claimed the doubles point as Baumgartner and Fritz posted an 8-4 win at the first position, while senior Fredrik Peterson teamed up with fellow senior Andrew Whiting for an 8-2 win at the third position. And against the Gaels, Baumgartner won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-3), Sweet won in three sets at No. 4 singles (3-6, 6-4, 7-5), and Schneider won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-2). USU also claimed the doubles point as Baumgartner and Fritz notched an 8-4 win at the first position, while Peterson and Whiting teamed up for an 8-7 win at the third position.

• Utah State women's basketball (15-16, 8-10) concluded its 2013-14 season with a 1-1 record at the Mountain West Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., last week as it posted a 69-66 win against ninth-seeded New Mexico, before losing to top-seeded Colorado State, 72-67, in the quarterfinals. Against the Lobos, senior guard Jennifer Schlott scored 29 points, while sophomore guard Stephanie Bairstow added 16 points and sophomore guard Makenlee Williams scored 11 points. USU finished the game shooting 47.5 percent (28-59), including 42.9 percent from three-point range (6-14) and 58.3 percent at the free throw line (7-12). UNM shot 41.1 percent (23-56), including 31.3 percent from three (5-16) and 65.2 percent at the line (15-23). Against the Rams, Schlott scored 20 points and tied her career-high with 11 assists for her fifth career double-double, while Bairstow scored a career-high 19 points and Williams added 14 points. USU finished the game shooting 41.9 percent (26-62), including 35.7 percent from three-point range (10-28) and 55.6 percent at the free throw line (5-9). CSU shot 40.0 percent (22-55), including 22.7 percent from three (5-22) and 82.1 percent at the line (23-28).

• Utah State posted a 1-2 record last week in Boise, Idaho with a 6-1 loss to Boise State, a 7-0 win against Lewis-Clark State, and a 4-1 loss to UTEP. Against the Broncos, sophomore Kallie Sperry won in three sets at No. 3 singles (3-6, 7-6, 10-8). Against the Warriors, junior McKenzie Davis won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), freshman Nini Guensler won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-1), Sperry won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0), freshman Lexi Turley won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2), sophomore Amber Stuhlmann won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-1), and sophomore Ashley Stuhlmann won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-0). USU also won all three doubles matches as Guensler and Turley posted an 8-1 win at the first position, Davis and Amber Stuhlmann notched an 8-1 win at the second position, and Sperry teamed up with Ashley Stuhlmann for an 8-1 win at the third position. And against the Miners, USU claimed the doubles point as Davis teamed with Amber Stuhlmann for a 6-3 win at the second position, while Sperry teamed up with Ashley Stuhlmann for a 6-5 win at the third position.

USU will begin its weekend series with CSU on Friday, Mar. 18 at 3 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday, Mar. 22 at 1 p.m., and the series finale on Sunday, Mar. 23 at 11 a.m.

• Sophomore Noelle Johnson helped Utah State to a 3-6 record last week as it lost a pair of doubleheaders at CSU Bakersfield (3-2, 4-3) and at CS Northridge (2-1, 5-4), and then posted a 3-2 record at the UC Santa Barbara hosted Gaucho Classic II with wins against Portland State (8-0), Monmouth (8-2) and Dartmouth (2-1), and losses to UCSB (8-0) and Monmouth (4-2). Against the Roadrunners, Johnson only allowed three earned runs and struck out eight batters in the 3-2 loss. She then pitched in both games against the Matadors, taking the loss in both contests, despite only allowing one earned run. Johnson then pitched 6.0 innings, allowing six hits and no runs to record the win against PSU. Against Monmouth, she only allowed two runs and struck out eight batters in 5.0 innings for the win. And in the final game of the tournament against Dartmouth, she threw a complete game allowing only one unearned run and striking out five for the win. For the week, Johnson made five starts and seven appearances and posted a 3-3 record in 40.1 innings pitched. She struck out 42 batters and ended the week with a 1.39 ERA, allowing only eight earned runs. Johnson also hit .308 (4-13) during the week with three RBI.

• Utah State's outdoor track & field teams will travel to Eugene, Ore., this week to compete in the Oregon Preview on Saturday, Mar. 22.

• Junior Chari Hawkins earned honorable mention All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships held last weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. as she placed 14th in the pentathlon with 4,025 points. Hawkins started the pentathlon with a sixth-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.33 to break her own school record. She then placed third in the high jump with a leap of 1.79m (5-10.50), placed 11th in the shot put with a heave of 11.48m (37-08.00), finished 15th in the long jump with a distance of 5.67m (18-07.25), and finished 16th in the 800m with a time of 2:35.36 for her second-best pentathlon score.

• Utah State men's golf will continue its 2014 spring season on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 17-18 in Primm, Nev., at the South Dakota hosted Jackrabbit Spring Invitational.

Last Competition

• Utah State finished in sixth-place out of nine teams with a 60-over 924 (308-310-306) at the Cal State Fullerton hosted Folino Invitational in its last competition. Senior Tanner Higham finished tied for ninth for USU with a 7-over 223 (76-74-73) for his fourth top 10 finish this year and the 10th of his career. Sophomore Seokwon Jeon finished tied for 34th with a 17-over 233 (78-77-77), while freshman Braxton Miller tied for 36th with a 19-over 235 (76-78-81). Sophomore Reed Platke finished in 38th-place with a 21-over 237 (78-83-76), and fellow sophomore Brennan Coburn tied for 41st with a 23-over 239 (79-80-80).
