LOGAN, Utah - Utah State cross country/track & field senior Dillon Maggard and junior Alyssa Snyder were named the Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively, at the annual Robins Awards, taking place on Saturday, April 14, on the campus of Utah State University.
Although still in the midst of the outdoor season, Maggard capped his indoor season with a pair of All-American honors after finishing fifth in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:06.69 and fifth in the distance medley relay in a school-record time of 9:32.31. Maggard also set a pair of school records during the indoor season, running the 3,000-meters in 7:52.99 and the 5,000-meters in 13:40.59. During the cross country season, Maggard also earned All-American honors with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships, the highest finish for an Aggie in Utah State history. Maggard finished the 10k race with a time of 29:16.20. He also earned all-region honors with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, crossing the finish line in 30:26.40, and all-conference honors with a third-place finish at the Mountain West Championships with a time of 23:54.45.
Other nominees for Male Athlete of the Year included football senior Jalen Davis, tennis senior Jaime Barajas, basketball sophomore Sam Merrill, golf senior Braxton Miller and track & field sophomore Sindri Gudmundsson.
On the women’s side, Snyder became just the second USU cross country All-American in school history after finishing 25th at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships with a time of 20:03.39. She was the top finisher for the Aggies during the cross country season in six of the seven races, including a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regionals, where she earned all-region accolades with a time of 20:38.20. At the MW Championships, Snyder finished sixth with a time of 20:55.40, earning all-conference honors.
Other nominees for Female Athlete of the Year included basketball sophomore Olivia West, gymnastics junior Madison Ward, soccer senior Bailee Hammond, volleyball senior Lauren Anderson, track & field junior Brenn Flint and tennis freshman Sasha Pisareva.
Finalists for the Athlete of the Year were selected by members of the athletics department. A selection committee over these categories then selected the winners. The awards were just two of 20 honors extended by the University during the evening, with students, faculty and staff all receiving recognition to their individual contributions to Utah State.
