• Utah State's outdoor track and field teams will continue its outdoor season this weekend as it travels to Boise, Idaho, to compete in the Idaho-Utah Border Clash on Saturday, May 1.

NTS --- at California Invitational
• A winning and school-record performance by the men's 4x100 meter relay team highlighted Utah State track and field's solid performances Saturday to finish action at the Cal Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Other highlights included senior Steve Strickland winning the men's 3,000m steeplechase with the second-fastest time in the country. USU's 4x100m relay team set a new school record clocking in at 40.38, the fastest in the Western Athletic Conference so far this season. Senior Dylan Nielson ran the first leg, followed by junior Armahd Lewis, then freshman Matt Maughan and sophomore Jeff Alley was the anchor. The foursome beat the previous school record of 40.40 set in 2002. In total, the Aggies nabbed 11 top-three finishes during the weekend in Berkeley. Senior Steve Strickland won the 3,000m steeplechase, clocking in a time of 8:42.97, which is not only the best in the WAC this season, but currently the second-best in the country to date. Strickland was just shy of his USU record of 8:42.71 that he set last year. In addition to running the second leg of the 4x100, Lewis finished in second-place in the 100m with a personal-best 10.71 time. Sophomore Joe Canavan took second in the shot put with a distance of 16.83m (55-02.75), while junior Spencer Hall matched him by taking second in the discus, throwing 50.33m (165-01) which is a new season-best mark. Junior Mike Pyrtle finished the 100m invite in a personal-best time of 10.47, tabbing third-place. On the women's side, senior Erin Stratton finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:24.08, which is the second-best in the WAC this season. Also doing well for the women was junior Sonia Grabowska who cleared a season-best 3.87m (12-08.25), tabbing fourth in the pole vault. On Friday, senior Nick Karren won the 400m hurdles clocking in at 50.70, which is a new personal-best mark, the fourth-best in USU school history and also the top time in the WAC this season. Junior Clint Silcock finished in second-place in the high jump on a judge's decision, 2.18m (7-01.75). Aggie women highlights included junior Lindsey Spencer capturing second in the hammer with a distance of 54.86m (180-00). Elaine Connolly clocked in at 2:10.65 in the 800m, tabbing third-place with a new season-best time.

• Utah State (11-12, 2-6) concluded its 2010 spring season with a 7-0 home win against Idaho State last week. Junior Hailey Swenson won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), freshman Jaclyn West won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-1), freshman Kristina Voytsekhovich won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (7-5, 6-0), sophomore Monica Abella posted a three-sets win at No. 4 singles (6-2, 3-6, 12-10), junior Taylor Perry won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (7-5, 1-0, ret.) and senior Britney Watts won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-3). In doubles play, Swenson and West posted an 8-6 win at the number one spot, Perry and Voytsekhovich notched an 8-3 win at the number two spot, and Abella and Watts teamed up for an 8-0 win at the number three spot.

• Utah State (11-10, 0-3) concluded its 2010 spring season with a 7-0 home win against Idaho State last week. Junior Jakob Asplund won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-4), freshman Sven Poslusny posted a three-sets win at No. 2 singles (4-6, 7-5, 7-5), junior Bryan Marchant won in straight sets at No. 3 singles (6-0, ret.), senior Amit Maharaj won in straight sets at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-2), junior Nikita Ryashchenko won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (6-3, 6-1) and junior Matt Braithwaite won in straight sets at No. 6 singles (6-4, 7-5). In doubles play, Asplund and Marchant teamed up for an 8-6 win at the number one spot, Maharaj and Poslusny recorded an 8-4 win at the number two spot, and Ryashchenko teamed with junior Alex Thatcher for an 8-6 win at the number three spot.

• Utah State's men's golf team will return to action on Monday, May 3 when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the WAC Golf Championships from Monday through Wednesday, May 3-5.

Last Week
16th/18 --- at PING Cougar Classic, Provo, Utah
• Freshman Tanner Higham fired a final round 68 to finish tied for 24th-place with a one-over par 217 at the BYU hosted PING Cougar Classic last weekend. As a team, Utah State finished in 16th-place with a 29-over 893 (299-312-282). Higham shot a four-under 68 during his final 18 holes to finish at one over 217 for the tournament as carded rounds of 75 and 74 on Friday. Junior Tyson McFarland was Utah State's next best finisher as he tied for 68th with a 10-over 226 (74-79-73). Fellow junior Chanse Godderidge tied for 70th as he shot an 11-over 227 (78-81-68), and junior Benjamin Schilleman tied for 75th as he finished with a 12-over 228 (77-78-73). Senior Thad Truman was USU's final competitor and finished tied for 86th with a 17-over 233 (73-86-74).

• Utah State's softball team (18-24, 5-11) will begin its week with a doubleheader at Utah (21-23) on Monday, April 26 at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader at home against Weber State (1-37) on Tuesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. USU will then play a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at New Mexico State (21-24, 2-13) on Friday and Saturday, April 30 and May 1. The two teams will begin the series with a doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

• Freshman second baseman Tina Ferguson led Utah State to a 4-1 record last week as it swept a doubleheader from Utah Valley by scores of 12-2 and 8-6, and then won two of three games against San Jose State by scores of 4-2, 1-2 and 2-1. In the first game against UVU, Ferguson went 3-for-3 at the plate with two triples, four RBI and one run scored. In the second game against the Wolverines, she again was 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. In the first game against San Jose State, Ferguson hit a walk-off three run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give USU the come-from-behind win. In the series finale against the Spartans, she once again drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. For the week, Ferguson hit .643 (9-14) with three home runs, two triples, five runs scored and 13 RBI.
