• Utah State’s softball team (32-12, 14-6 MW) continues its 2017 season this weekend with a three-game Mountain West series at San José State (32-15, 12-6 MW). The Aggies and Spartans will begin the series on Friday May 5, at 1 p.m. (MT), followed by single games on Saturday and Sunday, May 6-7, at 1 p.m. and noon (MT), respectively.

• Utah State posted a 2-1 Mountain West home record last week against San Diego State (W 4-2, W 4-1, L 5-15 (5)). USU utilized three pitchers on the weekend a senior Kellie White started two of the games, with senior April Brown starting the other. Junior Jordyn McCracken also saw some time in relief. In all, the Aggie pitchers allowed 21 hits and 17 earned runs, while striking out eight batters and walking 13. Junior third baseman Amee Aarhus led the Aggie offense, as she hit .667 (6-of-9) on the weekend. Senior first baseman Paxton Provost was tops defensively with 20 putouts.

2017 NCAA Tournament, TBA
• Utah State’s men’s tennis team (23-8, 6-1 MW), ranked 45th nationally, will compete in the NCAA Tournament for the first time as a team when the event starts on Friday, May 12, at regional sites. The Aggies will find out their site and opponent on Tuesday, May 2.

• Utah State claimed its first Mountain West tournament tennis title last week in Boise, Idaho, as it defeated eighth-seeded Boise State in the quarterfinals (4-0), fifth-seeded San Diego State in the semifinals (4-1) and third-seeded and defending champion UNLV in the championship match (4-0). Against the Broncos, USU took the doubles point as senior Jack Swindells and sophomore Jonas Maier won at the second position (6-2) and juniors Jaime Barajas and Andrew Nakajima won at the third position (6-3). In singles, junior Kai Wehnelt won at the No. 1 spot (6-2, 6-3), freshman Sergiu Bucur won at the No. 5 spot (6-3, 6-3) and Maier won at the No. 6 spot (6-3, 6-3). Against the Aztecs, USU lost the doubles point. In singles, sophomore Samuel Serrano won at the No. 3 spot (6-3, 6-4), Swindells won at the No. 4 spot (2-6, 6-3, 6-3), Bucur won at the No. 5 spot (6-0, 6-3) and Maier won at the No. 6 spot (6-3, 6-0). In the championship match against UNLV, USU took the doubles point as Maier and Swindells won at the second position (6-4) and Barajas and Nakajima won at the third position (6-3). In singles, Swindells won at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-4), Bucur won at the No. 5 spot (6-0, 6-4) and Maier won at the No. 6 spot (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).

• Utah State’s outdoor track & field teams will continue its 2017 season this week at the Weber State Twilight Meet on Wednesday and Thursday, May 3-4.

Last Week
NTS --- at BYU Invitational
• Utah State captured five gold medals as part of 30 top-five finishes last weekend at BYU-hosted Clarence Robison Invitational. Senior AJ Boully led USU with a pair of titles as he placed first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.82 and then anchored the 4x400m relay team, which crossed the tape first with a time of 3:10.01. Freshman Michael Bluth, sophomore Nick Ashby and junior Brady Martin joined Boully on the winning 4x400 relay team. Freshman Dylan Barker collected his first career victory in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:51.69. Redshirt freshman Sindri Gudmundsson also found his way onto the top of the podium as he won the javelin title with a throw of 68.90m (226-00.50). On the women’s side, sophomore Brenn Flint captured her second shot put title of the season with a mark of 14.76m (48-05.00).

• Utah State women’s tennis (13-11, 2-3 MW) concluded its 2017 season last weekend by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Championship, held in Las Vegas, Nev. USU began the tournament with a 4-2 win against ninth-seeded San Diego State in the first round, followed by a 4-0 loss against host and top-seeded UNLV. Against the Aztecs, SDSU took the doubles point, but sophomore Jenna Kane and freshman Lucy Octave won their match at the third position, 6-4. In singles, Octave won at the No. 3 spot (6-3, 6-3), sophomore Monika Van de Vondel won at the No. 4 spot (6-4, 6-2), junior Sabrina Demerath won at the No. 5 spot (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) and freshman Hannah Jones won at the No. 6 spot (7-6, 6-0). Against the Rebels, UNLV took the doubles point, but Demerath and senior Nini Guensler won at the second position (6-3). The Rebels then took the first three singles matches to win the dual match.
