• Utah State’s outdoor track & field teams will continue its season next weekend as qualifying individuals will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, which will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 24-26, in Sacramento, Calif. USU sent 18 student-athletes to last year’s NCAA West Prelims.

• Utah State won six gold medals during the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held last weekend at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. The Aggie men placed fourth with 131 points, while the women took fifth with 78 points. Sophomore Sindri Gudmundsson defended his title in the men’s javelin as the native of Kopavogur, Iceland, won the event with a throw of 78.14m (256-04), which broke his own MW Outdoor Championships record – he threw 77.19m (253-3) last year in Logan. Fellow thrower David Hirschmann, a senior, successfully defended his 2017 discus title with a mark of 55.20 meters (181-01). Hirschmann also placed second in the finals of the shot put with a career-best heave of 17.81m (58-05.25), which ranks ninth all-time in school history. Senior Clay Lambourne swept the indoor and outdoor 800-meter titles for the second time in his career, doing so in both 2018 and 2016, as he crossed the finish line in 1:47.96, while senior teammate Jordan Beutler took second place with a time of 1:49.08. Junior Sam Nelson captured the pole vault title with a mark of 5.00m (16-04.75). He also won the pole vault at the MW Indoor Championships. In the finals of the 5,000m, senior Dillon Maggard crossed the finish line second with a time of 13:55.85, and sophomore Kyle Morris placed third in the javelin with a mark of 62.01m (203-05). In the finals of the 3,000m steeplechase, a couple of Aggies placed in the top five as senior Spencer Fehlberg took second with a time of 9:02.74, while junior Adam Hendrickson finished fifth with a time of 9:13.32. On the women’s side, junior Cierra Simmons crossed the finish line in a school-record time of 9:56.60 to capture the 3,000-meter steeplechase crown. Her time ranks second all-time in MW Championships history and it broke her previous school record of 9:59.85 set earlier this season. Junior Brenn Flint captured the shot put crown with a mark of 16.65m (54-07.50). Senior Olivia Moriconi gave the Aggies a 1-2 finish in the event as she placed second with a mark of 16.28m (53-05.00). Flint took second in the discus with a throw of 52.79m (173-02). Senior Tylee Newman-Skinner took third in the 1,500m with a school-record time of 4:23.99, while fellow senior Mia Estes captured second in the javelin with a throw of 48.33m (158-07).

• Utah State men’s tennis (19-9, 7-0 MW), ranked 50th nationally, concluded its 2018 season with a 4-1 loss at No. 8 TCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Addy Vashistha won his singles match at the No. 5 spot in straight sets (6-1, 7-5). Other Aggies who competed in the match include seniors Jaime Barajas and Andrew Nakajima, sophomore Sergiu Bucur, and freshmen Felipe Acosta, Jose Carvajal and Valdemar Holm. Overall, it was USU’s second NCAA Tournament appearance in as many years.

• Utah State’s softball team (18-34, 7-17 MW) concluded its 2018 season last weekend with an 0-3 Mountain West road record at San Diego State (L, 2-0; L, 6-1; L, 4-3). Three pitchers saw time in the circle for the Aggies, as freshman Delaney Hull, sophomore Kellie White and senior Jordyn McCracken each threw a complete game. Together, the three tallied nine strikeouts and walked five batters, while posting a 3.50 ERA and allowing 22 hits and nine earned runs. Senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke led the USU offense, as she batted .300 (3-of-10) on the weekend. As a team, the Aggies hit .174 (12-of-69), including two doubles and two home runs. Junior first baseman Bailee Trapp was tops defensively, tallying 26 putouts.
