KC Smurthwaite Named Major Gifts Officer at Utah State
July 12, 2016

LOGAN, Utah - Moving from his role as an assistant softball coach, KC Smurthwaite has been named a Major Gifts Officer within the Utah State Athletics development office.

"We're excited about bringing KC on board with our development staff. He brings a unique perspective, having been involved in fundraising before at USU Eastern, but combining that with his coaching experience on the softball side," said USU Vice President and Athletics Director John Hartwell. "We're excited about getting him engaged with our donors."

Smurthwaite spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the softball team, where he worked directly with the USU outfielders, while assisting with recruiting.

"I want to thank John Hartwell, Jana Doggett and Jeremy Winn for the opportunity to work with them on the administrative side of Utah State Athletics," Smurthwaite said. " I love being an Aggie and look forward to helping grow Aggie Nation."

This season, Smurthwaite helped Utah State to its best season in 20 years, posting a 26-25 overall record while going 12-12 in Mountain West action. In his two seasons with the softball team, he helped the outfield to improved statistics across the board, while coaching four outfielders to all-Mountain West honors.

Smurthwaite came to Utah State in the 2014 season, spending the year as a softball team manager and an assistant in the athletics compliance office. As a team manager, Smurthwaite helped by throwing batting practice, assisting in day-to-day duties and working with the infielders.

Prior to coming to Utah State, Smurthwaite was an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at USU Eastern in Price, Utah. Smurthwaite originally signed with USU Eastern as a player, but injuries cut his playing days short, leading him to the coaching profession. During his playing career, he was ranked as high as No. 20 for recruiting region by Baseball Northwest.

Smurthwaite is fluent in Spanish after serving an LDS Church Mission in Morristown, New Jersey. He also spent time as a play-by-play TV and radio commentator at USU Eastern and Southern Utah. While at USU Eastern, Smurthwaite also fulfilled a variety of athletic administrative roles.

A Meridian, Idaho native, Smurthwaite began his college career at USU Eastern. He graduated from Southern Utah with a degree in communication studies in 2013 and received a master’s degree from Utah State in physical and sport education in 2015.
