LOGAN, Utah – Utah State University Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hartwell and Learfield’s Aggie Sports Properties, the multimedia rights holder for USU Athletics, announced Tuesday radio affiliates and broadcast talent for the 2017-18 football and basketball seasons.
A partnership with USU Athletics and Larry H. Miller Sports & Entertainment was announced this past May where KZNS 1280 The Zone, based in Salt Lake City, would be the new flagship for Aggie Athletics beginning this fall. KZNS will carry all Aggie football and men’s basketball games on 1280 AM and 97.5 FM in Salt Lake City and along the Wasatch Front.
In addition to live broadcasts of every Aggie football and men’s basketball game, KZNS 1280 The Zone will produce and broadcast weekly football and men’s basketball coaches shows from Logan, along with one-hour pregame and 30-minute postgame shows for both programs.
Additionally, the Aggie Sports Network will now include two affiliates in Cache Valley with KBLU-LP (92.3 FM) in Logan and KACH (1340 AM/105.5 FM) in Preston, Idaho. Four more frequencies will be available throughout the state of Utah as Aggie fans will be able to hear live broadcasts on KRPX 95.3 FM in Price, KRPX 102.7 FM in Green River, KRPX 100.3 FM in Moab and KRPX 95.9 FM in Orangeville, as well as on the internet at www.UtahStateAggies.com.
As for broadcast talent, Scott Garrard will serve as the play-by-play announcer for both football and men’s basketball, while Kevin Whimpey will provide color commentary during football games. Garrard is the Vice President of Radio Operations for the Larry H. Miller Sports and Entertainment Group and is a 2001 Utah State graduate. Whimpey was a three-year letterman at offensive tackle for Utah State from 2012-14 and earned first-team all-Mountain West honors as a senior. Whimpey, who graduated for USU in 2014, was a member of the winningest senior class in school history with 37 victories, which included three-straight bowl wins.
Al Lewis, the “Voice of the Aggies” for the past 22 years, was extended a contract offer to remain as the play-by-play announcer for both football and men’s basketball, but that offer was turned down.
Broadcast information regarding Aggie women’s basketball, along with a color analyst for men’s basketball, will be announced at a later date.
