• Utah State's volleyball team will begin the 2009 season on Friday, Aug. 28 at Weber State in the first day of competition in the 2009 Weber State Invitational. USU and WSU will play at 7:30 p.m., in Swenson Gym on the Weber State campus. On Saturday, Aug. 29, USU will play Gonzaga at 11 a.m., followed by a match against Utah Valley at 5 p.m. Utah State is 30-19 all-time against Weber State, 3-1 all-time against Gonzaga, and 4-1 all-time against Utah Valley.

Notes
• Fourth-year head coach Grayson DuBose welcomes back six starters and seven letterwinners from last year's team that finished 11-17 on the season and in fourth-place in the WAC with a 9-7 league record. USU also welcomes seven newcomers to the program which includes one transfer and six freshmen. Among those returning for Utah State is a trio of second-team all-WAC performers from a year ago in junior middle blocker Katie Astle, junior setter Chelsea Fowles and junior libero Christine Morrill, while sophomore opposite side hitter Emily Kortsen was named to the league's all-freshman team in 2008. USU also returns junior middle blocker Danielle Taylor who earned second-team all-WAC honors in 2007 before redshirting during the 2008 season. Highlighting the list of newcomers is freshman outside hitter Josselyn White who earned first-team all-state honors as both a junior and senior at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. White was also named the Region 5 Most Valuable Player her senior season, along with being named Cache Valley Player of the Year by the Logan Herald Journal.

• Utah State is picked to finish third in the WAC this year according to the league's coaches, while Fowles and Morrill were both named to the conference's all-preseason team.

• Utah State will travel to El Paso, Texas this weekend to compete in the 12th annual Miner Classic hosted by UTEP. USU will begin the tournament against Texas Tech on Friday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m., and then face Stephen F. Austin on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. USU will be facing both TTU and SFA for the first time ever.

W, 2-0 --- NORTHERN ARIZONA
• Utah State began the 2009 season with a convincing 2-0 win against Northern Arizona at home on Friday. Sophomore goalkeeper Molli Merrill earned her first collegiate shutout in just her fourth match. Sophomore defender Summer Tillotson scored the first Utah State goal of the 2009 season in the 14th minute on a penalty kick after a Lumberjack hand ball in the box. It was Tillotson's third career goal after depositing two in the back of the net in 2008. The Aggies doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute behind the leg of sophomore striker Shantel Flanary. Sophomore Danielle Shorts earned her first collegiate point with an assist on the second goal of the match. Senior midfielder Lindsey Smart took a free kick from 30-yards out, Shorts then took the ball and crossed it to Flanary who redirected it with her right foot from six yards out to give the Aggies the 2-0 lead.
