Thur., Aug. 30 --- SOUTHERN UTAH, 6 p.m. (KMYU TV)
Utah State's football team (0-0) will kickoff the 2012 season at home against Southern Utah (0-0) on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. (MT). USU leads the all-time series 2-0. The game will be televised regionally on KMYU TV.
Utah State is picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference this season after posting a 7-6 record in 2011, including a 5-2 league mark to finish tied for second-place. USU concluded its season with a 24-23 loss to Ohio in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, its first bowl game since 1997. The Aggies return 19 starters (O-8, D-6, S-5) and 44 lettermen (O-19, D-20, S-5) from last year's team, including junior center Tyler Larsen who earned first-team all-WAC honors a year ago.

Utah State's volleyball team (3-1) will hit the road for the first time this year as it travels to San Diego, Calif., to compete in the Holiday Inn Mission Valley Aztec Challenge. USU will begin the tournament against Montana (0-3) on Friday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. (MT), followed by a pair of matches on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Sacred Heart (1-2) and San Diego State (2-0) at 10:30 a.m. (MT) and 8:30 p.m. (MT), respectively. USU is 6-8 all-time against UM and 4-5-1 all-time against SDSU, while its match against SHU will be its first-ever meeting.

Utah State posted a 3-1 record and a second-place finish at its own Utah State Invitational this past weekend with wins against Portland (3-0), Southern Utah (3-1) and Weber State (3-0), to go along with a loss to Utah (3-2). Against the Pilots, senior outside hitter Josselyn White hit a career-high .500 (14-0-28) with 14 kills, while redshirt freshman middle blocker Elle Brainard hit .615 (8-0-13) with eight kills. USU hit .333 (47-12-105) in the match and UP hit .183 (34-17-93). Against the Utes, senior opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen had 11 kills, while Brainard added five kills and seven total blocks. USU hit .045 (38-32-134) in the match and UU hit .155 (63-38-161). Against the Thunderbirds, White had 15 kills to go along with a career-high 18 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Rachel Orr added 12 kills. USU hit .241 (53-21-133) in the match and SUU hit .115 (45-27-156). Against the Wildcats, White had 11 kills and Orr added six, while sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff had seven block assists. USU finished the match hitting .235 (30-14-68) and WSU hit a negative .057 (26-31-88). White, Brainard and sophomore libero Ashlan Rogers were all named to the tournament team for USU.

Utah State women's soccer (3-0-1) will play a pair of matches this week as it hosts Northern Colorado (0-2-1) on Friday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m., and plays at Utah Valley (1-1) on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. USU is 3-0 all-time against UNC and 3-1 against UVU.
T, 1-1 (2OT) --- at Creighton

Utah State posted a 1-0-1 road record last week as it notched a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Creighton before posting a 3-1 win at Nebraska-Omaha. Against the Bluejays, junior midfielder Jennifer Flynn scored USU's only goal in the 32nd minute. Senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Aggies, while freshman Jeannie Woller played the remaining 65. The senior allowed one goal, while making four saves. Woller made one save in her first overtime match. Against UNO, junior forward Mari Miyashiro scored a pair of goals, and freshman forward Danielle Gaztambide added another. After only six shots in the first half, USU ended the match with 21 compared to only seven by UNO. Once again the Aggies split time in goal with Mulford taking the first 45 minutes and Woller taking the second half and earning the win.

Sat., Sept. 1 --- AGGIE INVITATIONAL, 9 a.m.
Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams will begin its 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 when it hosts the Aggie Invitational at the newly landscaped Innovation Campus Wellness Park, which is located at 1498 North 800 East in Logan. The men will run at 9 a.m., while the women will race at 9:30. Several high school teams will also race at the conclusion of the collegiate races.
Utah State's men's cross country team has won six WAC Championships in the last seven years (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011) and returns four men from last year's championship team, including junior Kyle McKenna who was named first-team all-WAC after placing fifth at the 2011 WAC Cross Country Championships. Other USU men returning from a year ago include seniors Aaron Clements and David Cluff, along with sophomore Eric Shellhorn.
Utah State's women's cross country team finished third at the 2011 WAC Championships and won WAC titles in 2006 and 2008. USU's women return six athletes from last season including senior Ruth Hilton who earned second-team all-WAC honors in 2011 and first-team all-WAC honors in 2010. Junior Kaylee Campbell and sophomore Brittany Bushman also return after garnering second-team all-WAC accolades in 2011. Campbell also earned second-team all-WAC honors in 2010.
