Sat., Sept. 25 --- at San Diego State, 6 p.m.
• Utah State's football team (1-2) will play its second road game of the season as it travels to California to face San Diego State (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. (MT). The game will not be televised. USU is 1-9 all-time against the Aztecs, which includes a 1-6 road record. USU lost the last meeting between the two teams, 19-10, on Sept. 27, 1975 in Logan.

L, 24-41 --- FRESNO STATE
• Fresno State scored 24 unanswered points to overtake and pull away from Utah State, 41-24, Saturday night in a hard-fought battle that was the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. Senior quarterback Diondre Borel led USU with 106 yards passing with one TD pass, and 66 rushing yards and another score, part of the Aggies' 205 yards rushing, finishing the night with 311 yards of total offense. Fresno State totalled 379 yards of total offense, with 230 on the ground and 149 passing by Ryan Colburn on 15-of-23 with one TD. Colburn had one interception on the night, as senior cornerback Chris Randle deflected Colburn's pass and junior defensive end Quinn Garner collected it for his first career interception. Junior linebacker Bobby Wagner logged a career-high 17 tackles, his second-straight double-digit tackle outing, including one tackle for loss, adding one fumble recovery, one pass break-up and one quarterback hurry. Fellow junior linebacker Kyle Gallagher added nine stops with one tackle for loss. Sophomore wide receiver Dontel Watkins had four catches for 52 yards to lead the receivers, including an 8-yard TD toss that gave USU a 7-0 lead at the 6:30 mark of the opening quarter.

• Utah State's soccer team (3-2-4) will play two in-state matches this week as it faces Utah (1-9) in Salt Lake City on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., before hosting No. 9 Brigham Young (7-0-1) on Saturday at 4 p.m.

• Utah State went 0-1-1 last weekend in a pair of road matches as it lost at Loyola Marymount, 2-0, and tied UC Riverside, 0-0, in double overtime. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford made her first career starts during the weekend and posted seven saves during the two matches including her first career shutout against the Highlanders.

• Utah State's volleyball team (12-1) will play just one match this week as it travels to Honolulu to begin Western Athletic Conference play against No. 6 Hawai'i (10-1) on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 11 p.m. (MT).

L, 2-3 --- UTAH VALLEY
• Utah State went 3-1 last week as it defeated Brigham Young (3-2) on the road and then finished in third-place at its own Utah State Invitational with wins against Loyola Marymount (3-2) and UC Riverside (3-1), to go along with its first loss of the year to Utah Valley (3-2). Against the Cougars, sophomore opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen recorded a career-high 16 kills and hit .382 (16-3-34) in the match, while junior outside hitter Liz McArthur had 15 kills and 11 digs. USU hit .157 (54-30-153) in the match and BYU hit .234 (69-30-167). Against the Lions, McArthur had 22 kills and sophomore outside hitter Josselyn White finished with 12 kills and 12 digs. USU hit .323 (61-18-133) in the match and LMU hit .243 (64-233-169). Against the Wolverines, McArthur had 20 kills, 10 digs and five blocks, and senior libero Christine Morrill had a career-high 32 digs. White added a career-high 15 kills in the match, while senior middle blocker Shantell Durrant had 10 kills and eight blocks. USU hit .165 (65-32-200) in the match and UVU hit .103 (65-43-213). Against the Highlanders, McArthur had 18 kills and 10 digs, and Sorensen added 10 kills. USU hit .258 (53-14-151) in the match and UCR hit .181 (55-26-160).

• Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Friday, Oct. 1 when it travels to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.

Last Week
M - 2/11; W - T-3/6 --- at Montana State Invitational
• Junior Brian McKenna led the Aggie men to a second-place team finish at the Montana State Invitational Saturday, while the women finished tied for third, as the men had four runners finish in the top 15 and the women had three. It is the second-straight race that McKenna was the men's top finisher, completing the five-mile course in 25:05.00 to finish second overall. Following McKenna was junior Daniel Howell clocking in at 25:25.00 in seventh place. Two more Aggies finished in the top 15 for the men, including junior Hunter Nelson (26:02.00) in 12th place and freshman Kyle McKenna (26:06.00) in 13th place. Junior Jessie Chugg was the Aggies' top finisher on the women's side for the second race in a row as well, completing the three-mile course in 17:42.00 to place eighth. USU had two finishers in the top 15 as sophomore Ruth Hilton clocked in at 17:48.00 in 11th place and sophomore Alex Litzsinger crossed the finish line in 21st place (18:06.00).

Sun.-Mon., Sept. 19-20--- at Air Force Invitational, All Day
• Utah State's golf team will compete in its first tournament of the fall season on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 19-20 when it travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Falcon Invitational. Utah State returns six letterwinners from last year's team that finished in eighth-place at the WAC Championship. Senior Benjamin Schilleman played 25 rounds last year and finished with a stroke average of 73.92, while junior Chanse Godderidge played in 16 rounds and had an average of 74.63. Sophomore Tanner Higham played in 25 rounds and had a stroke average of 74.80, senior Tyson McFarland played in 25 rounds and had a stroke average of 75.36, sophomore Brendan Dennis played in eight rounds and had a stroke average of 78.88, and sophomore Austin French played in eight rounds and had a stroke average of 81.00. USU has four current players who competed in the 2009 Falcon Invitational as Schilleman tied for 20th (72-68-77 -- 217), McFarland tied for 36th (73-70-77 -- 220), Higham tied for 101st (79-80-79 -- 238) and French tied for 103rd (76-80-83 -- 239).

Fri.-Sat., Sept. 24-25 --- UTAH STATE OPEN, All Day
• Utah State's men's tennis team will begin its fall season on Friday, Sept. 24 when it hosts the Utah State Open. The tournament will conclude on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Aggies return four seniors in Jakob Asplund, Nikita Ryashchenko, Alex Thatcher and Bryan Marchant. Asplund led USU last year with an 11-15 record at No. 1 singles. USU also returns junior Nate Ballam and sophomore Sven Poslunsy.

• Utah State's women's tennis team will return to action on Friday, Oct. 1 when it hosts the Utah State Open. The tournament will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 2.

Last Week
NTS --- at BYU Invitational
• Junior Taylor Perry was Utah State's top finisher at the Brigham Young Fall Invitational last weekend as she finished first in the `B' singles draw and second in the doubles draw with sophomore teammate Jaclyn West. In the `B' singles draw, Perry defeated BYU's Andie Young in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in the championship match to finish the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. Senior Hailey Swenson also had a solid weekend for USU as she won the consolation `A' singles draw with a 5-1 record after defeating Colorado State's Veronica Wojakowska in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) in the championship match. Other Aggies to compete during the tournament include juniors Monica Abella, Brianna Harris and Julie Tukuafu, sophomores Jenny Phillips, Kristina Voytsekhovich, Whitney White and Mersadi Wilkins, and freshmen Michelle Warwick and Kimberly Watts.
