This Week
Fri., Oct. 4 --- BYU, 6 p.m. (CBS Sports Network)
• Utah State's football team (3-2, 2-0) will continue its 2013 season this weekend as it hosts in-state rival BYU (2-2) on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m., in a game that will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network (Comcast Ch. 269/753HD, Dish Network Ch. 158, DirecTV Ch. 221). USU is 34-45-3 all-time against the Cougars, including an 18-15-2 record.

W, 40-12 --- at San Jose State
• Behind 520 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns from junior quarterback Chuckie Keeton, Utah State speared the Spartans of San José State, 40-12, in a nationally-televised game on ESPN. Junior placekicker Nick Diaz booted a career-high four field goals, including a season-long of 45 yards, marking the first time a USU kicker had four field goals in a game since 1999. Utah State's 520 yards came on 260 through the air as Keeton was 29-of-42 passing with three touchdowns. Keeton also rushed for 52 yards on 12 carries with another score, as part of the Aggies' 253 yards on the ground. Senior running back Joey DeMartino rushed 17 times for 120 yards, both career-highs, while senior wide receiver Travis Reynolds also posted a pair of career-bests with eight catches for 77 yards. Sophomore wide receivers Brandon Swindall and Bruce Natson both added five receptions apiece with Swindall finishing with a team-high and career-best 79 yards in tying his career-high for catches. Natson ended with 34 yards. The Aggie defense was led by the linebacker duo of junior Zach Vigil and sophomore Kyler Fackrell with 11 tackles apiece. Fackrell, who tied his career-high with 11 stops, also registered his fourth sack of the season and seventh of his career. It was Vigil's third double-digit tackle outing of the season and eighth of his career. Vigil also recovered his second fumble of the year and his career. Utah State's defense entered the game without any interceptions, but left the game with three, as senior safety Maurice Alexander, senior cornerback Nevin Lawson and junior cornerback Jeremy Morris all snared oskies. It was Lawson's third interception of his career and his second at Spartan Stadium. Alexander and Morris posted their first interceptions of their career.

• Utah State's soccer team (5-4-2, 1-1-0) continues its 2013 season with a pair of Mountain West home matches this weekend as it hosts Air Force (2-6-1, 1-0-0) on Friday, Oct. 4 and Wyoming (4-6-1, 1-0-0) on Sunday, Oct. 6 with both contests beginning at 1 p.m. USU is 2-0-1 all-time against the Falcons and 2-3-2 all-time against the Cowgirls.

• Utah State posted a 1-1-0 Mountain West record last week as it lost a road match at Nevada, 2-0, and then won at UNLV, 2-1. Senior forward Jennifer Flynn scored the game-winning goal against the Rebels in the 71st minute, while freshman midfielder Jayne Robison scored USU's first goal in the 35th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Jeannie Woller had four saves against UNLV and one save against Nevada.

• Utah State's volleyball team (9-5, 3-1) will continue its 2013 season this week with a pair of Mountain West matches as it hosts New Mexico (11-2, 2-1) on Thursday, Oct. 3 and Air Force (4-11, 1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 5 with both contests beginning at 7 p.m. USU is 10-11 all-time against the Lobos and 0-0 all-time against the Falcons.

• Utah State posted a 1-1 Mountain West record last week with a 3-1 loss at Fresno State and a 3-0 win at San Jose State. Against the Bulldogs, junior outside hitter Rachel Orr had 19 kills and 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, while sophomore opposite side hitter Elle Brainard had 15 kills and six blocks, and senior outside hitter Tumua Etimani added 14 kills and 14 digs. USU hit .119 (53-32-176) in the match and FS hit .144 (62-36-181). Against the Spartans, Orr had 14 kills, while Brainard and Etimani each posted 10 kills. USU hit .416 (47-5-101) in the match and SJSU hit .276 (42-15-98).

• Utah State's men's golf team will continue its 2013 fall season on Monday, Oct. 7 when it competes in the Utah Invitational in Park City, Utah. The tournament will run through Tuesday, Oct. 8.

5th/12 --- at Dash Thomas Memorial, Boise, Idaho
• Utah State's Tanner Higham shot a final round 4-under par 67 to claim his first-ever tournament title with a collegiate-best 8-under 205 (71-67-67) at the Boise State hosted Dash Thomas Memorial. Utah State finished the tournament in fifth-place out of 12 teams with a 15-over 867 (287-283-297). Overall, Higham is the first Aggie golfer to win a tournament outright since the fall of 1996 when Todd Tanner won medalist honors after carding a 3-over 147 (77-70) at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stanislaus, Calif. Furthermore, Higham's 8-under 205 is the best 54-hole score by an Aggie golfer since the fall of 2007 when Devin Daniels carded a 12-under par 204 (70-64-70) to finish tied for 15th at the Agua-Caliente Air Force Invitational in Palm Springs, Calif. At the Dash Thomas Memorial, Higham began the tournament with an even-par 71 before firing a season-low 4-under par 67 during his second 18 holes. During his final round, Higham again shot a 4-under 67 to defeat Cal State Fullerton's Mark Anguiano by one stroke as he finished with a 7-under 206 (70-70-66). Sophomore Seokwon Jeon finished tied for 17th-place with a 4-over 217 (69-72-76), while freshman Eli Rogers tied for 32nd-place with a 10-over 223 (74-70-79). Junior Grahm Schmaltz finished tied for 40th-place with a 12-over 225 (73-77-75), and freshman Braxton Miller tied for 54th-place with a 17-over 230 (77-74-79). Sophomore Brennan Coburn also competed for USU as an individual and finished tied for 40th-place with a 12-over 225 (78-73-74).

• Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams will continue its 2013 season on Saturday, Oct. 5 when it travels to Lehigh, Pa., to compete in the Lehigh Paul Short Run at 8 a.m. (MT).

M: 2/8; W:1/8--- at Montana State Invitational
• Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams continued their successful start to the 2013 season with the Aggie women winning the team title and the men placing second at the Bozeman Running Company Montana State Invitational in Bozeman, Mont., last weekend. The Aggie women took the top spot in the team standings in the three-mile race, while their male counterparts finished in second in the five-mile competition. Senior Alex Litzsinger (17:39.00) set the pace for the USU women with a fifth-place finish. Freshman Tori Parkinson wasn't far behind, as she took the sixth spot with a time of 17:49.00. Sophomore Jacqueline Winterton (17:56.00) and freshman Cierra Simmons (17:57.00) closed out the top 10 for USU with ninth and 10th-place finishes, respectively. On the men's side, senior Kyle McKenna led all Aggies with a time of 25:16.00, good for third-place. Close behind McKenna was junior Eric Shellhorn (25:22.00), who took fourth. Junior Jacob Barton (25:51.00) and sophomore Kade Jensen (25:56.00) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, to round out the top 10 finishers for Utah State.

• Utah State men's tennis will continue its 2013 fall season this week as it travels to Boise, Idaho to compete in the Boise State Fall Classic from Friday, Oct. 4 through Sunday, Oct. 6.

NTS --- at Weber State Invitational
• Senior Andrew Whiting won three singles matches en route to placing third in Flight C at the Weber State Invitational last weekend, including a straight sets win against Weber State's James Smith (6-4, 7-6) in the third-place match. Freshman Tomas Cosmai won the seventh-place match in Flight B against junior teammate Curran Wearmouth in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Senior Matt Thatcher teamed with Cosmai for an 11th-place finish in the doubles consolation draw, while Wearmouth and Whiting won the 13th-place match.

• Utah State women's tennis will conclude its 2013 fall season next week as it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals from Wednesday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 13.

• Sophomore Kallie Sperry led Utah State at the Washington State hosted Cougar Classic last weekend as she won two singles matches on her way to the quarterfinals of the Crimson Flight. Sperry also advanced to the finals of the Crimson Doubles Flight with junior teammate McKenzie Davis by capturing three doubles wins. Freshman Cassidy Branstine posted a 3-1 singles record as she won the Crimson Singles Consolation Bracket, while sophomore Amber Stuhlmann also posted a 3-1 singles record to win the Gray Singles Consolation Bracket. Freshman Lexi Turley notched a 2-1 singles record, while sophomore Ashley Stuhlmann went 1-2 in singles play and posted a 2-1 record in doubles competition. Other Aggies to compete in the tournament include freshman Katie Sweet.
