Sat., Oct. 9 --- at Louisiana Tech, 2 p.m.
• Utah State's football team (2-3, 0-1) will return to Western Athletic Conference play as it travels to Louisiana Tech (1-4, 0-1) on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. (MT), in a game that will be televised live on Altitude Sports (Comcast Ch. 61 in Cache Valley). USU is 3-4 all-time against the Bulldogs, which includes a 1-2 road record. USU won the last meeting between the two teams, 23-21, on Oct. 24, 2009 in Logan.

• A swarming, stout defense and two Derrvin Speight touchdowns paved the way for Utah State's 31-16 caging of the Cougars from BYU Friday, the Aggies' first win over the Cougars since 1993, snapping a 10-game losing skid. Speight rushed for a career-high two TD's on a career-best 22 carries, part of Utah State's 59 rushes, the most in school history since at least 1990. The Aggie defense snared two interceptions, matched by two sacks, and held BYU to just 65 rushing yards, a new season-low, as was the 16 points. The Aggie offense gained 243 yards in the first half and 191 in the second for a 434 total, opening a 31-3 lead mid-way through the third quarter. Senior quarterback Diondre Borel started the scoring with a 79-yard TD pass, catch and run to junior wide receiver Xavier Martin at the 6:57 mark of the first quarter. Borel ended the night 10-of-13 passing for 192 yards, the fewest pass attempts for USU since 1991 when Ron Lopez was 9-of-13 in a 46-21 win at New Mexico State. Speight totalled 91 yards, his second-most of his career behind 99 in his freshman season of 2007. Borel added 68 yards on the ground while sophomore Kerwynn Williams had a career-best 15 carries for 51 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Dontel Watkins had three catches for 28 yards, while Speight matched that in yards on two receptions and junior tight end Kellen Bartlett added 26 yards on two catches. Junior linebacker Bobby Wagner posted 11 tackles and fellow junior linebacker Kyle Gallagher added 10 stops. The senior duo of cornerback Chris Randle and safety Rajric Coleman each snared an interception, as Coleman added two pass break-ups. Junior defensive end Levi Koskan and senior defensive end Devin Johnson each had a sack.

• Utah State's soccer team (5-4-4, 2-0) will play two home matches this week as it hosts Western Athletic Conference foe Nevada (6-5-2, 1-1) on Friday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m., followed by a non-conference match against Houston Baptist (3-8-1) on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. (MT).

• Utah State began WAC play with a 1-0 victory at Louisiana Tech and a 3-0 win at New Mexico State last weekend. Against LTU, senior Heather Pond scored her first career goal in the 10th minute. Against NMSU, freshman Kendra Pemberton scored USU's first goal in the 52nd minute, senior Lauren Hansen scored in the 69th minute, and sophomore Katie Crosland scored in the 90th minute.

• Utah State's volleyball team (13-3, 1-2) will hit the road this week and play at Idaho (7-8, 2-2) on Wednesday, Oct. 6 and at Boise State (14-4, 2-2) on Saturday, Oct. 9. USU's match against the Vandals will be televised live on ESPNU at 8 p.m. (MT), and its match against the Broncos will start at 3 p.m.

Last Week
• Utah State went 1-1 at home last week as it defeated Fresno State (3-0) and lost to San Jose State (3-1). Against the Bulldogs, sophomore opposite side hitter Shay Sorensen had 12 kills and hit a career-high .526 (12-2-19) in the match, and senior setter Chelsea Fowles had five kills and tied her career-high with a .833 (5-0-6) hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Liz McArthur added 10 kills, while senior middle blocker Shantell Durrant had six kills and hit .667 (6-0-9). USU hit .345 (41-11-87) in the match and FSU hit .073 (27-20-96). Against the Spartans, McArthur had a match-high 19 kills to go along with three service aces, three block assists and four digs, while Sorensen had nine kills. Senior libero Christine Morrill added 20 digs in the match. USU finished with a .211 (48-20-133) hitting percentage and SJSU hit .205 (53-23-146).

• Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when it travels to Terre Haute, Ind., to compete in Pre-Nationals.

Last Week
M - 14/21; W - 21/24 --- at Notre Dame Invitational
• Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams competed well at the 55th Annual Notre Dame Invitational Friday as the men finished in 14th place and the women tabbed 21st overall. Junior Brian McKenna finished 10th overall in the five-mile race with a time of 24:09. McKenna has been the men's top finisher in every race thus far this season. Junior Jessie Chugg (95th) was the Aggies top finisher on the women's side clocking in at 18:03 in the 5k race. Chugg has led the Aggies in all three races so far this season. Following McKenna was junior Daniel Howell (24:29) tabbing 26th place. Finishing second for the Aggie women was sophomore Ruth Hilton (100th) crossing the finish in 18:07. USU's men tabbed 14th place with 574 points. Oregon took first with 69 points, followed by New Mexico (78) in second place and Florida State (99) in third. On the women's side the top finisher was Villianova with 64 points followed by Oregon with 118 points and Florida State (129) took third. The Aggies tabbed 21st place.

• Utah State's golf team will return to action on Monday, Oct. 4 when it competes in the Nevada Classic hosted by the University of Nevada-Reno.

Last Competition
10/18 --- at Air Force Invitational
• Utah State's Tyson McFarland shot a final round 75 to tie for 15th-place with a two-over 218 at the 42nd annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational hosted by Air Force last weekend. As a team, Utah State finished in 10th-place with a 29-over 893 (304-291-298) out of 18 teams. McFarland fired a two-under 70 during his first round and then shot a one-over 73 in his second round before carding a three-over 75 in his final 18 holes. Senior Chanse Godderidge finished tied for 39th with an eight-over 224 (72-78-74), while sophomore Austin French finished in 75th-place with a 15-over 231 (80-70-81). Sophomore Brendan Dennis had the low round of the day for the Aggies during the final 18 holes with a one-over 73 as he finished tied for 83rd with a 17-over 233 (82-78-73). Senior Benjamin Schilleman was tied for 43rd after the first day of competition as he carded rounds of 79 and 70 for a five-over 149, but was later disqualified for dropping in an illegal area during his first round. Schilleman finished the tournament by shooting a four-over 76 during his final 18 holes.

Thur.-Sat., Oct. 14-16 --- at Utah Invitational, All Day
• Utah State's men's tennis team will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 14 when it travels to Salt Lake City to compete in the Utah Invitational. The tournament will run through Saturday, Oct. 16.

Last Week
NTS --- at Tulsa Invitational
• Senior Nikita Ryashchenko led Utah State at the prestigious 2010 D'Novo ITA Men's Tennis All-American Championships held this past weekend in Tulsa, Okla. Ryashchenko was the sole Aggie to advance past the first round as he defeated Tulsa's Patrick Collins, 6-3, 6-0, in the first round then fell to New Mexico State's Arthur Surreaux, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round. Ryashchenko is now 2-2 in singles action this fall. Other Aggies to compete in the tournament include seniors Jakob Asplund, Bryan Marchant and Alex Thatcher, and sophomore Sven Poslusny.

Next Competition
Tues.-Sat., Oct. 12-16 --- at ITA Regionals, Las Vegas, All Day
• Utah State's women's tennis team will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 12 when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the ITA Regionals. The tournament will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Last Week
•Senior Hailey Swenson took first place in both the singles and double flights at the Utah State Invitational last weekend. Swenson defeated Weber State's Naseem Eslami, 6-3, 6-2, in the championship match of the singles flight improving her to 9-1 this fall. In doubles action, Swenson paired with sophomore teammate Jaclyn West to take the doubles flight title. Swenson and West defeated Weber State's Annika Karlsen and Kristi Russel, 8-1, in the semifinal round and sophomore teammates Brianna Harris and Kristina Voytsekhovich, 8-4, in the championship match. Swenson and West are a perfect 3-0 in doubles action this fall. Other Aggies to compete in the tournament include senior Taylor Perry, juniors Monica Abella and Julie Tukuafu, sophomores Jenny Phillips, Whitney White and Mersadi Wilkins, and freshman Kimberly Watts.
