LOGAN, Utah - Utah State University's Athletics Department held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday for its newly completed off-court basketball facilities renovation project as USU Athletics Director Scott Barnes officially opened the Nate and Heather Wickizer Men's Basketball Locker Room and Lounge and the MerLynn Pitcher Women's Basketball Locker Room and Lounge.
"This project hits the mark in terms of delivering a high-quality functional facility with the WOW factor that our coaches can recruit to," said Barnes. "It is especially gratifying to see a former student-athlete step up with the lead gift the way that Nate did."
Among the renovations within the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum are new men's and women's locker room and lounge areas that will enhance space for practice and game day preparation as well as the opportunity to excel in the classroom through newly created study and lounge spaces. A newly completed training room was also included in the renovations, along with a new film room for women's basketball and volleyball.
"The Nate and Heather Wickizer Locker Room is a fabulous upgrade for our program," said men's head coach Stew Morrill. "This much-needed renovation only happened because of the efforts of our Athletics Director Scott Barnes and the generosity of Nate and Heather, along with all of the other donors. I know our current players appreciate what they now have and also realize our past players success played a part in this wonderful project. Thanks from me to all involved."
"I am just really, really grateful for the initiative that Athletics Director Scott Barnes and the rest of our administration showed in wanting to get this project done," said women's head coach Raegan Pebley. "This is an investment in our program that MerLynn Pitcher made and it is tremendous. It will enhance the current student-athlete's experience, but it will also help us attract other quality student-athletes in the future."
Both locker rooms and lounge areas are equipped with flat-screen televisions, leather couches, computers and refrigerators, along with new lockers. The men's locker room also has a cold pool to aid in muscle recovery, while an additional cold pool for the women's team is located inside the training room.
