• Utah State's football team (8-5, 7-1) will conclude its 2013 season in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl against No. 24 Northern Illinois (12-1, 8-0) on Thursday, Dec. 26 at 7:30 p.m. (MT). The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. USU is 1-0 all-time against the Huskies.

L, 17-24 --- at #24 Fresno State
• Utah State forced four turnovers and recovered an on-side kick in an attempt to win the inaugural Mountain West Football Championship game last weekend, but fell at 24th-ranked Fresno State, 24-17. Utah State trailed 24-7 early in the fourth quarter before scoring 10 points in 2:55 to get within one score at 24-17 and was driving inside the Bulldogs' 40 yard-line in the final minute before getting intercepted at the FS 8 yard-line to end the game. Utah State had its five-game winning streak snapped with the loss and is now 8-5 on the season. USU also fell to 2-50 all-time against ranked teams, including a 1-40 road record. Fresno State improved to 11-1 with the win. Junior wide receiver Ronald Butler led Utah State as he had a career-high five receptions for a career-best 145 yards, while senior wide receiver Travis Van Leeuwen tied his career-high with six receptions for 52 yards and sophomore wide receiver Bruce Natson had four receptions for 50 yards, to go along with two rushes for 11 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run. Senior running back Joey DeMartino finished the game with 54 yards on 18 carries, while freshman quarterback Darell Garretson was 12-of-26 passing for 198 yards with one interception and junior quarterback Craig Harrison was 4-of-9 passing for 55 yards and one interception. Derek Carr led Fresno State as he was 36-of-53 passing for 404 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, while Isaiah Burse had 17 receptions for 132 yards and one touchdown, and Davante Adams added nine receptions for 168 yards with another score. Utah State finished the game with 304 yards of total offense as it had 253 yards passing and a season-low 51 yards rushing. Fresno State had 460 yards of total offense with 404 passing and 56 rushing. Senior linebacker Jake Doughty led Utah State's defense with 10 tackles for his ninth double-digit tackle outing this year and the 13th of his career. Doughty also had 0.5 tackles for loss and recovered his second career fumble that he returned 86 yards for a touchdown. Junior safety Brian Suite added nine tackles and a career-high two interceptions to give him four interceptions on the season and five in his career.

• Utah State men's basketball (5-2) will continue its 2013-14 season this weekend with a home game against Utah Valley (3-5) on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. USU is 8-0 all-time against the Wolverines, including a 4-0 home record.

• Utah State lost its only game last week to Pacific at home, 78-68. Senior center Jarred Shaw had 17 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Marcel Davis scored a season-high 13 points off the bench and senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield added 11 points and eight rebounds. USU finished the game shooting 42.3 percent (22-52), including 27.8 percent from three-point range (5-18) and 79.2 percent at the free throw line (19-24). Pacific shot 50.0 percent overall (29-58), including 45.5 percent from behind the arc (5-11) and 71.4 percent at the charity stripe (15-21).

• Utah State women's basketball (5-3) will continue its 2013-14 season next week with road games at UC Santa Barbara (4-4) on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. (MT) and at BYU (8-0) on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. USU is 2-5 all-time against the Gauchos and 3-31 all-time against the Cougars.

• Utah State posted an 0-2 road record last week with losses at South Dakota (81-71) and at 13th-ranked Nebraska (95-75). Against the Coyotes, senior guard Jennifer Schlott had 27 points, while sophomore guard Makenlee Williams and junior center Franny Vaaulu each scored 16 points. Williams also had a season-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year and the third of her career. USU finished the game shooting 32.1 percent (26-81), including 21.1 percent from three-point range (4-19) and 88.2 percent at the free throw line (15-17). USD shot 43.1 percent (25-58), including 22.2 percent from behind the arc (4-18) and 61.4 percent at the charity stripe (27-44). Against the Cornhuskers, Williams scored 21 points, Schlott had 13 points, and junior guard Elise Nelson finished with 10 points. USU shot 41.7 percent for the game (30-72), including 29.6 percent from three-point range (8-27) and 77.8 percent at the free throw line (7-9). UN shot 59.6 percent overall (28-47), including 53.3 percent from three (8-15) and 83.8 percent at the line (31-37).
