CHOICES for LIFE
The NCAA awarded Utah State University a $30,000 CHOICES Grant, to be distributed over three academic years beginning in Fall 2011. The grant is designated to facilitate the establishment of CHOICES for LIFE in collaboration with the university's Aggies Think, Care, Act (ATCA) initiative. The grant provides funding for the Student Health and Wellness Center and athletics to partner with many campus organizations to develop, implement and sustain programming for alcohol education and prevention, as well as alcohol-free events. Through the ATCA initiative, the funding also supports programs that encourage students to make choices that positively impact their life and the lives of others.
The CHOICES for LIFE program and Aggies Think, Care, Act initiative will also focus on leadership development based on the Step Up! Curriculum through a variety of trainings and academic courses. Student leaders from across campus, including student-athletes, will be taught effective bystander intervention strategies and be empowered to "Be a Leader, Make a Difference!" Through the NCAA's CHOICES Grant, Utah State will develop sustainable programs and leadership development that will be well established and continue to prosper after the grant's funding.
The CHOICES grant will also support the establishment of Utah State's APPLE Team, a group of campus and athletic administrators and student-athletes, which will attend APPLE conferences in January 2012 and January 2014. The conference will assist Utah State's APPLE Team to promote student-athlete health and wellness by empowering them to create an institution-specific action plan.
