Student-Athlete Mentors

A Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) is a veteran student-athlete who has proved themself as an exemplary role mode. SAMs are selected through an application and interview process. Their primary function as a peer leader is offering experiences, knowledge of resources and leadership to new student-athletes and teammates in the hope that ultimately it will improve their experience and tenure at Utah State.

SAMs complete a peer mentor and culture development based training program to prepare for their role as a peer leader and mentor. SAMs commit to developing themselves as more than just a student and/or an athlete. They hold themselves accountable for serving as a peer mentor and committing to developing themselves as a person, future professional and leader. SAMs agree to a set of minimum program expectations and a code of conduct.

The Student-Athlete Mentor program is co-advised by Ryan Barfuss, Prevention Specialist in the USU Student Wellness Center, and Amber Rae Childers, Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Academic Services. For more information on how to become involved with the SAMs program, contact Amber Rae Childers at 435-797-3294 or amberrae.childers@usu.edu
