Student-Athlete Mentors

A Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) is a veteran student-athlete who has proved themself as an exemplary role mode. SAMs are nominated by their coaches and go through an interview and training process to prepare for their duties as a SAM. Their primary function is offering experiences and knowledge to new student-athletes in the hope that ultimately it will improve their experience and tenure at Utah State.

SAMs facilitate small group sessions for the USU 1010 course each fall and serve as positive role models on and off campus. SAMs are placed in teams and are assigned a small group of new student-athletes. The SAMs team serves as the small group's mentors throughout the semester and school year assisting them in making a smooth transition to Utah State. In addition, they serve as peer educators and liaisons to their teammates.

The Student-Athlete Mentor program is co-advised by Ryan Barfuss, Prevention Specialist in the USU Student Wellness Center, and Amber Rae Childers, Life Skills Coordinator for Student-Athlete Academic Services. For more information on how to become involved with the SAMs program, contact Amber Rae Childers at 435-797-3294 or
