The Joe E. and Elma Whitesides Scholar-Athlete Awards Luncheon recognizes student-athletes who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or greater. Student-athletes who have an average two-previous semester GPA of 3.20 are also recognized. This event is truly a who's who among Utah State academe, as the University President, Provost, and College Deans all attend and participate. Also, student-athletes are encouraged to invite a favorite professor or college advisor to recognize their role in the academic success of the student-athlete.
In addition to individual awards, team academic awards are presented for overall academic acheivement, as well as an award for the most improved team. An outstanding tutor and outstanding mentor award are also presented to the individuals who, as voted upon by the Academic Services staff, have had the greatest impact with student-athletes in those roles. An award titled 'Meet the Challenge' is presented to a member of the academic campus community for his or her role in working with Academic Services. The final award is the Joe E. Whitesides award, presented to the student-athlete who is graduating and completing athletic eligibility, with the highest grade point average - the athletic's valedictorian.
The award and luncheon is named after Joe E. Whitesides, who was a former football and basektball coach, athletics director, and dean of students at Utah State. He was also a Utah State Legislator and was an army Commander in World War II and the Korean War. He started the award in 1953, primarily for student-athletes in football and basketball. Among early recipients were Bob Harbertson (the first), Merlin Olsen, Randy Stockham, and Eric Hipple. The first non-male recipient was gymnasts Haley Houtchens and Lori Loudner in 1994.
