A Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) is a veteran student-athlete who has proved him / herself as an exemplary role mode. SAMs are nominated by their coaches and go through an interview and training process to be ready for their duties as a SAM in the fall. Their primary function is offering experiences and knowledge to new student-athletes in the hope that ultimately it will improve their quality of life.
SAMs facilitate small group discussions for the USU 1010 course each fall and serve as positive role models on and off campus. SAMs are placed in partnerships and are assigned 10 new student athletes and act as that group's mentors throughout the semester and school year assisting them in making a smooth transition to the University. In addition, they serve as peer educators and liaisons to their teammates.
The Student-Athlete Mentor program is co-advised by Ryan Barfuss, Director of the USU Student Wellness Center, http://www.usu.edu/swc, and Amy Crosbie, Life Skills Coordinator, Student Athlete Services. For more information on how to become involved with the SAMs program, contact Amy Crosbie at 797-3294 or amy.crosbie@usu.edu.
