LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's track and field teams had 12 individual winners in its first indoor meet of the 2008 season at its own Wilson Motor Invitational held at the George Nelson Fieldhouse on the USU campus here Friday afternoon. Joining USU in competition were Idaho State, Utah and Utah Valley.

"This meet was exciting for us because it's the beginning of the year and we wanted to see where everybody is at and try to open up strong at home," said veteran USU head coach Gregg Gensel. "We had a lot of great performances today with our sprinters, pole vaulters and distance runners. All across the board we had a really good effort."

Junior Krista Larson paced the Aggie women as she recorded a personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 55-00.75 (16.78m) to finish first in the event. Other individual winners for USU included senior Stacie Dorius in the mile (5:13.70), junior Katie Thatcher in the 400m hurdles (58.32), sophomore Erin Stratton in the 800m (2:21.09), sophomore Ashlee Cannon in the 60m hurdles (8.92), and freshman Maria Halton in the 60m (7.76).

Freshman Sonia Grabowska also recorded a personal best for Utah State as she finished third in the pole vault with a height of 12-00.00 (3.66m)

Junior Nick Karren and sophomore Andrew Niccoli led the Aggie men, winning the 400m (49.11) and 800m (1:58.67), respectively. Other individual winners for USU were juniors Palmer Hawkins and David Loomis in the pole vault with a height of 15-00.00 (4.57m), sophomore Jason Holt in the mile (4:21.87), and freshman Silas Pimentel who had a personal best in the 60m with a time of 6.95.

"It's really early (in the season) so the marks are not the best yet, but I'm excited about where we are and where we are going to be," added Gensel.

Utah State will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 in the Snake River Invitational hosted by Idaho State University.
