Aggie Track Does Well Saturday At Idaho State Snake River Open

POCATELLO, Idaho - Utah State men's and women's track and field teams had solid performances Saturday at the Idaho State Snake River Open at ISU's Holt Arena. Other teams competing were host Idaho State, Southern Utah, Utah, Utah Valley, Weber State and members of the Pocatello Track Club. "We accomplished what we wanted to do today," USU head coach Gregg Gensel said. "We were able to see what they could do and how well they could perform and I was very pleased with everyone's performances." On the women's side, Gensel was especially pleased with senior Amy Egan in the 800 and junior Krista Larson in the weight throw who both won their events. Egan was clocked at 2:12.63, winning by almost two seconds, while Larson logged the sixth-best distance in school history with a 52-8.50. For the men, Gensel singled out freshman Chio Lopez and junior Nik Karren, as Lopez was second in the mile with a time of 4:15.53, while Karren won the 60m hurdles with a 8.23 time, the sixth-fastest in USU history. Gensel also gave high praise to the 400 meter runners and the relay teams for both the women's and the men's teams. In the women's 400 meters, freshman Katelyn Jensen broke the tape in the 400 meter with a 57.62, just ahead of sophomore teammate Elaine Connolly's 58.25 for second, while freshman Camile Fehlberg was seventh with a 59.50. The Aggie women's 4x400 meter relay was second with a time of 3:53.72. Senior Dasheek Akwenye, running unattached, won the men's 400 with a 47.82, just shy of his personal-best of 47.39 from last year, while classmate Brett Knighton was sixth with a 50.43. The USU men's 4x400 meter relay team won the event with a 3:17.21 time.
Other top performers included sophomore Ashlee Cannon won the women's 60 meter hurdles with an 8.83, tying for the third-best time in school history. Redshirt-freshman Heidi Hopkins was sixth with a 9.22 time. Sophomore Jennifer Scheiss was second in the high jump with a height of 5-4.25 Junior John Strang had a personal-best height of 6-9.75 in finishing second in the high jump and logging the ninth-highest height in history for the Aggies. Strang was also third in the long jump with a 21-10 leap, a quarter of an inch behind second-place teammate senior Lamar Brown at 21-10.25. Utah State returns to action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26, at Pullman, Wash., for the Washington State Invitational.
