PULLMAN, Wash. - Utah State women's track and field team won four events and the men captured one event title on the final day of Washington State's Cougar Indoor and Multi's in Pullman, Wash., Saturday.

In head-to-head matchups the Aggie women defeated Western Athletic Conference foe Idaho, along with Montana and UCLA while losing to host Washington State. The men surrendered victories to all four other schools.

Winning their respective events for the USU women were senior Spela Hus in the shot put with a throw of 14.26m (46-09.50), sophomore Sam Nielson in the triple jump with a leap of 11.87m (38-11.50) and freshman Rachel Orr in the high jump with a mark of 1.73m (5-08.00). The women's 4x400 team also captured first-place, with the team consisting of senior Katelyn Heiner, juniors Hollie Bosworth and Aubrie Haymore along with freshman Krista Whittle.

For the men, freshman Nic Bowens was the only individual champion as he broke the tape in the 60m dash with a time of 6.90.

Overall, Utah State collected 22 top-five finishes. Taking second-place for the women was senior Kim Quinn in the 3,000m run (10:17.14) while fellow senior Sonia Grabowska took third in the pole vault [3.81m (12-06.00)]. Sophomore Chari Hawkins [5.44m (17-10.25)] led a 3-4-5 USU finish in the long jump with senior Katelyn Heiner [5.40m (17-08.75)] and sophomore Daphne Jones [5.36m (17-07.00)], respectively. Junior Bailee Whitworth crossed the finish line in the 60m dash with a time of 7.77 to claim fourth-place while senior Julia Stewart also placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.47m (37-07.75). Freshman Mariah Thompson finished fifth in the high jump [1.58m (5-02.25)] as senior Lindsey Spencer and freshman Melanie Heslop placed fourth and fifth with tosses of 12.64m (41-05.75) and 12.24m (40-02.00), respectively.

 

 

Other top five finishers for the men included freshman AJ Boully, who placed second in the 60m hurdles (8.30) and fifth in the 60m dash (7.16). Senior Daniel Howell claimed second in the 3,000m run (8:18.54) with fellow senior Chio Lopez close behind in fourth-place with a time of 8:22.02. Senior Joe Canavan garnered third-place in the shot put with a throw of 15.83m (51-11.25) while sophomore Devin Lang clocked in at a team season-best 4:19.77 in the mile to claim fourth-place. The men's 4x400 relay team also took home fifth-place with a time of 3:26.80.

Aggie track and field teams will continue the indoor season as they compete at Boise State's Bronco Class on Saturday Feb. 4 in Nampa, Idaho at the same Jackson Indoor Track that will also host the WAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 23-25 and the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 8-11. Utah State will also split action on Feb. 10-11 at the New Mexico Invite in Albuquerque, N.M. and the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
