NAMPA, Idaho - Utah State track and field sophomore Chari Hawkins captured her first Western Athletic Conference Indoor title as she collected a total of 3,669 points in the pentathlon on Thursday, day one of the 2012 WAC Indoor Championships at Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho.
With the win, Hawkins gives the USU women an early lead at the championships with 12 points. Nevada is second with nine points followed by New Mexico State with eight points.Idaho is fourth-place with six points along with Hawai'i in fifth-place with four points.
This is Hawkins' second-straight WAC multi-events title as she won the heptathlon at the 2011 WAC Outdoor Championships and it is her third first-team all-WAC honor as she took second in the pentathlon at the 2011 WAC Indoor Championships. It is also the second time an Aggie woman has won the WAC pentathlon title as Lacy Hubert won the it in 2006 for USU with 3,914 points. Hawkins won two of the five pentathlon events Thursday en route to the title, which included a personal-best leap of 5.73m (18-11.75) in the long jump. She also cleared 1.68m (5-06.00) in the high jump to claim first-place in the event.
Freshman McKenzie Johnson was the first to break the tape in the 800m with a time of with a personal-best time of 2:21.60. Johnson fell short of receiving second-team all-WAC honors by one point in the pentathlon as she took home seventh-place with 3,266 points. Junior Bri Campbell finished tied for second-place in the high jump [1.65m (5-05.00)] on her way to taking ninth in the pentathlon (3,181 pts.), while senior Jen Schiess claimed 10th-place (3,151 pts.).
Senior Philip Noble sits in second-place in the men's heptathlon after four of the seven events with 2,678 points. Junior Jon Goble is close behind Noble in points with 2,570 to sit in third-place heading into the second day of action while fellow junior Jordan McMurray and senior John Johnson are in sixth and seventh-places with point totals of 2,408 and 2,269, respectively.
Goble won the heptathlon's 60m dash with a time of 7.17 and took second in the shot put with a toss of 11.82m (38-09.50). Noble tied McMurray for second-place in the high jump with a mark of 1.81m (5-11.25), which is a personal-best for both Noble and McMurray. Noble also finished second in the long jump [6.40m (21-00.00)] and third in the 60m dash with a personal-best time of 7.23. McMurray finished in third-place in the shot put with a throw of 11.43m (37-06.00).
The men's heptathlon will conclude its final three events on Friday starting at 11 a.m. (MT). The first field events will then get underway at 1:30 p.m. while the track events are set to start at 4 p.m., that same day. On Saturday, the field events start at 11 a.m., with the running events beginning at 1 p.m. and all times are subject to change.

Those who qualify will return to Nampa, Idaho on March 8-11 for the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. The field for the championships will be announced on March 5 by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee. The Aggies will also be in action on March 3 at some last chance meets that have yet to be determined.
