Utah State's Men in Second, Women Third After First Day of Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Utah State's track & field teams kicked off the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Aggie men finished the day in second place with eight points, while the women are tied for third with 10 points.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Utah State’s track & field teams kicked off the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Aggie men finished the day in second place with eight points, while the women are tied for third with 10 points.

Overall, both New Mexico’s men and women lead the pack after day one with 10 and 14 points, respectively.

In the only event with Aggie men competing, USU placed second in the distance medley relay as freshmen Brody Smith and Michael Bluth, and juniors Dillon Maggard and Jordan Beutler, recorded a time of 9:49.24, which ranks third all-time in school history.

On the women’s side, sophomores Alyssa Hirschi and Kaylie King-Arnold finished fifth and sixth in the pentathlon with 3,516 points and 3,469 points, respectively. Hirschi ranks eighth and King ranks ninth all-time in USU history in the pentathlon.

Hirschi was balanced throughout, tying for third in the high jump (1.61m/ 5-3.25), sixth in the 800m (2:26.64) and seventh in the 60m hurdles (9.22).

King’s highlights include a fourth-place finish in the shot put (11.41m/37-5.25) and a seventh-place finish in the 800m (2:27.63).

Additionally, freshman Niki Xydona excelled in the high jump portion of the pentathlon, tying for first with a height of 1.64m (5-4.50). Xydona finished 11th with 3,400 points.

Day two kicks off with the finishing of the men’s heptathlon at 10 a.m. and the day will close at 4:55 p.m. with the women’s 5,000m. The final day starts with the women’s shot put at 10 a.m., with the championships ending at 2:30 p.m. with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay.
