Spencer Breaks Hammer Throw Record Friday As USU Track And Field Competes At Arizona To Open 2012 Outdoor Season
March 17, 2012
Tucson, Ariz. - Utah State senior Lindsey Spencer set a new school record in the hammer throw [60.30m (197-10.00)] while the men and women's track and field teams captured two event titles as part of 15 top-five finishes on Friday, at Arizona's Willie Williams Classic and Dave Murray Distance Carnival at Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson.
Senior Camille Fehlberg broke the tape first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.73 while fellow senior Hunter Nelson crossed the finish line with a time of 3:50.07 in the 1,500m to win the event. USU also had four athletes take second-place in their respective event including Spencer in the hammer throw along with juniors Stephanie Burt and Kaylee Campbell in the 1,500m (4:40.73) and 3,000m steeplechase (11:38.60), respectively. Freshman Devin Wright also placed second in the javelin [63.61m (208-08.00)], a mark that ranks him at No. 8 in Aggie history. Burt's time of 4:40.73 in the 1,500m is a personal-best.
"Lindsey has been working hard and came out strong in the first outdoor meet; it is great to see her do so well," said veteran Aggie head coach Gregg Gensel. "We expect the athletes to come and do their best and they have done that so far. Hunter hasn't had a chance to compete this year because he is only eligible for the outdoor season, so it is great to see him come out this strong. We also knew that Devin Wright was a good athlete and he threw the javelin as far as we have seen in recent memory. For him to place in the top 10 as a freshman is outstanding."
Other top-five finishers for the USU women were sophomore Hannah Williams and senior Kim Quinn taking fourth and fifth-places in the 1,500m clocking in at 4:40.80 and 4:43.37, respectively. Senior Spela Hus placed fifth in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 14.89m (48-10.25) which moves her to No. 5 all-time in Utah State history, as sophomore Sam Nielson also placed fifth in the javelin with a mark of 41.35m (135-08.00), the 10th-best javelin mark in Aggie history.
Seniors Aaron Clements and Daniel Howell finished third and fourth in the men's portion of the 1,500m crossing the finish line with times of 3:54.36 and 3:55.30, respectively. Sophomore Bryce Hall garnered fourth-place in the hammer throw with a toss of 55.25m (181-03.00), while junior Silas Pimentel and freshman Austin Neuner took home fifth-place in the 200m and and 3,000m steeplechase with times of 21.37 and 9:53.44, respectively.
Action resumes at the Willie Williams Classic with the men's pole vault and women's discus starting at 11 a.m. (MT) and is set to conclude with the men's 4x400 meter relay at 4 p.m. All times subject to change.
Utah State's track and field teams will continue the outdoor season as they travel to Irvine, Calif., for UC Irvine's Spring Break Invitational on March 23-24. USU will host its lone home meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational, on April 21 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
