Hus Wins Shot Put To Lead USU Track And Field At UC Irvine's Spring Break Invitational Saturday

IRVINE, Calif. - Utah State senior thrower Spela Hus won the shot put with a toss of 14.63m (48-00.00) to lead USU to a solid finish at UC Irvine's Spring Break Collegiate Invitational at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday. Overall, the Aggies placed 23 student-athletes in the top-five of their respective events. Taking second-place for USU were juniors Bailee Whitworth in the 100m (12.07) and Aubrie Haymore in the 400m (55.76), along with freshman Nic Bowens in the 200m (21.54). Bowens also finished third in the 100m (10.69). Senior Lindsey Spencer also tabbed second-place honors in the discus with a mark of 51.39m (168-07) to go along with a third-place finish in the shot put [13.94m (45-09.00)]. Freshman Devin Wright continued to throw well in the javelin as he took home his second-straight silver prize with a mark of 56.93m (186-09). "Today was one of those days where we are looking for improvement and really, at this time of year that is what we are looking for," said Utah State veteran head coach Gregg Gensel. "What we saw today was everyone being consistent or improving and that is what we want." Other top-five finishers for the USU women included seniors Sonia Grabowska who vaulted 3.86m (12-08.00) in the pole vault to place third. Freshmen Mariah Thompson and Rachel Orr each cleared 1.65m (5-05.00) to tie for fourth-place, while fellow freshman Aubriann Bosen placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 35.91m (117-10). Senior Julia Stewart also took home a fifth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 11.24m (36-10.50).
Freshmen McKenzie Johnson and Shaleen Richardson joined Whitworth and Haymore to cross the finish line in the 4x100m relay with a time of 48.69, which was good enough for fourth-place. Other top-five finishers for the Utah State men included seniors Daniel Howell and Aaron Clements who finished fourth and fifth in the 1,500m with times of 3:54.51 and 3:54.87, respectively. Sophomore AJ Boully collected a fifth-place finish in the 400m hurdles (53.11) while the men's 4x100m relay time clocked in at 41.31 to also take fifth-place. The relay team consisted of Bowens along with senior Xavier Martin and juniors Silas Pimentel and Will Henry. Junior Jordan McMurray also placed fourth in the javelin [50.82m (166-09)]. USU will continue the 2012 outdoor season at New Mexico's Tailwind Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday and Saturday April 6-7. The Aggies' will host their lone home meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday, April 21 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
