Quinn Breaks Utah State Record In 5000M At Mondo Mid-Major Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Utah State track and field junior Kim Quinn set a new school record in the 5000m with a time of 16:43.51 at Sacramento State's Mondo Mid-Major Challenge in Sacramento, Calif. on April 8-9. Overall, the Aggies brought home four event titles as part of 20 top-three finishes at the two-day meet. Quinn broke Lida Ripplinger's record of 16:46.76 set in 2005 by more than three seconds as she finished third in the event. With the time, Quinn also holds the top spot in the Western Athletic Conference this season, more than 12 seconds ahead of the next best time. Winning their event for USU was junior Joe Canavan (shot put), senior Eric Larson (1500m), freshman Kyle McKenna (5000m) and the 4x100m relay team (41.33), which consisted of senior Armahd Lewis, sophomore Silas Pimentel along with freshmen Tanner Hunt and Parker Bluth. Canavan remained undefeated in the shot put during the outdoor season as he had a throw of 17.07m (56-00.00), while Larson also stayed undefeated in the 1500m crossing the finish line with a time of 3:48.49, just ahead of fellow senior Hunter Nelson (3:48.67). McKenna won his first event of his Aggie career with a time 14:33.18 which stands at the second-best time in the WAC this season. Senior Clint Silcock ended in a three-way tie at the top of the high jump event with a leap of 2.15m (7-00.50). Silcock received a third-place finish on a judge's decision. Junior Damian Szade placed second in the long jump with a mark of 7.09m (23-03.25), while sophomore Spencer Hall ended in third-place of the discus with a toss of 47.90m (157-02.00) and in the hammer with a mark of 51.89m (170-03.00).
Other Utah State men placing in the top three was Lewis, who finished third in the 100m (10.48) and second 200m (21.46). Senior Steven Atkinson came in second in the 3000m steeplechase (9:11.43) just ahead of junior Aaron Clements (9:19.35). Rounding out the top three for the USU men were freshman Tanner Hunt in the 400m (48.08) and Pimentel in the 200m (21.68). For the Aggie women, junior Katelyn Heiner ran her career-best in the in the 400m with a 55.15, which was good enough for second-place. Sophomore Aubrie Haymore finished right behind Heiner with her career-best of 55.42. Freshman Kylie Hirschi also took home a second-place accolade in the 400m hurdles (1:01.25) while junior Spela Hus ended the day in third-place in the shot put with a throw of 14.16m (46-05.50). USU hosts its lone home meet of the year, the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday, April 16 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium. Action is set to begin at 10 a.m. (MT) starting with the field events and continuing with the running events at approximately 11:45 a.m. The final event of the meet is projected to begin at 4 p.m. All times are subject change.
