Aggie Sprinters Lead USU Friday In Day Two Action At UCLA

LOS ANGELES - Utah State men's and women's track and field performed well in day two Friday at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational and were led by senior Keith Williams who took the title in the men's 110m hurdles while junior Ashlee Cannon took second in the women's 100m hurdles.
Williams finished the 110m hurdles clocking in at 14.50 while Cannon finished her 100m hurdles race in 14.34.
The Aggies had a total of seven top-three finishes including Williams and Cannon, as junior Casey Parker tabbed third in the high jump at 6-06.00 (1.98m) as well as senior Blake Hadfield who took third-place in the triple jump 46-09.50 (14.26m) which is a new season best also.
Rounding out the five top-three finishes was senior Tyler Ellis who also tabbed a third-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 52-05.50 (15.99m) setting a new season best.
Sophomore Steven Atkinson set a new PR in the 3,000m steeplechase finishing in 9:30.64 in 13th in the invite only heat. Sophomore Daniel Cruz also set a new PR in the discus with a sixth-place distance of 161-00 (49.07m).
Sophomore James Allred was fifth in the 800m with a 1:52.94 time while junior Steve Strickland set a new PR in the 1,500m finishing in 3:54.59, placing eighth.
USU went 9th through 11th in the 5,000m, led by sophomore Brian McKenna's 14:40.43 time for ninth-place, while fellow sophomore Chio Lopez was right behind in 10th with a 14:40.52 and classmate Nick Bolinder was 11th at 14:41.17. Freshman Daniel Howell was 15th in 14:47.91 and sophomore Hunter Nelson was 21st in a 14:59.03 time.
On the women's side, sophomore Heidi Hopkins finished in eighth-place in the 400m hurdles setting a new PR clocking in at 61.90. Junior Jennifer Day also set new PR, finishing the 400m in 57.73, finishing in 12th-place.
In addition to Hilton in the 3,000m steeplechase, junior Erin Stratton was seventh with an 11:06.73 time while senior Ashley Johnson was ninth in an 11:09.67 time and senior Vanessa Gledhill was 11th with a time of 11:43.62.
Freshman Jessie Chugg led three USU women in the 1500m finishing sixth with a 4:38.90 time, while sophomore Alicia Holt was 10th in a 4:41.63 time and sophomore Kim Quinn in 15th with a time of 4:49.89.
The Aggies will continue action Saturday at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational. Saturday's events will begin at 12:15 p.m. (MT) with the men's high jump and will end at 3:55 p.m. with the men's 1600m relay. The rest of the Aggies will also be in action at Ogden, Utah in the Javier's Wildcat Invitational hosted by Weber State.
