Sacramento, Calif. - Utah State's men and women's track and field teams won three event titles as part of nine top-five finishes Friday at Sacramento State's Mondo Mid-Major Challenge at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.

Heading into Saturday's final day of competition at Hornet Stadium, USU's women are in first-place with a one-point advantage, 25-24, over Western Athletic Conference foe Fresno State, while the Aggie men are in second-place with 26 points, trailing the host Sacramento State who has 32 points.

Winning events for the Aggies were senior Daniel Howell, junior Jon Goble and freshman Mariah Thompson. Howell won the 5,000m with a personal-best time of 14:12.41, ranking him fifth all-time in Utah State history. Goble won five of the 10 decathlon events to capture the title with a personal-best point total of 6,603, which ranks him ninth in USU history, while Thompson took top honors in the high jump clearing a personal-best 1.70m (5-07.00).

Joining Goble in the top five of the decathlon were fellow juniors Jordan McMurray in third-place (5,444 points) and Sam Hawkins in fifth-place (5,209 points), respectively. The point totals for McMurray and Hawkins are also personal-best marks.

Freshman Jodi Williams finished in second-place in the high jump as she cleared 1.65m (5-05.00) to tie her personal-best height. Sophomores Kyle McKenna, Bryce Hall and Cherice Chugg also placed in the top five of their respective events with McKenna placing third in the 5,000m (14:38.46), while Hall placed fourth in the discus [48.09m (157-09)] and Chugg captured fifth in the 5,000m (18:31.60).

 

 

Saturday's action will kick off at 12 p.m. (MT) with the women's 4x100m relay and is set to conclude with the men's 4x400m relay at 4 p.m. All times subject to change. Utah State track and field will host its lone home meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium in Logan, Utah.
