LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's men and women's track and field teams won 16 events as part of 40 top-three finishes in hosting the USU 2012 Mark Faldmo Invitational at Ralph Maughan Track Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
Highlighting the winning Aggies were the throwers duo of senior Lindsey Spencer and sophomore Bryce Hall. Spencer won the hammer throw Friday with a mark of 61.04m (200-03), while winning the discus Saturday with a 52.22m (171-04) distance. Hall also won the hammer Friday with a 56.93m (186.09) distance while collecting top honors in the discus with a toss of 50.46m (165-07).
Other USU athletes taking top honors in their events were seniors Katelyn Heiner (400m/54.70), Kim Quinn (1,500m/4:40.56), Sonia Grabowska (pole vault/4.12m [13-06.25]), Spela Hus (shot put/14.30m [46-11.00]), Aaron Clements (1,500m/3:52.64) and Brian McKenna (5,000m/15:35.15). Juniors Kenny Hamlett and Tyler Killpack won the triple jump (13.97m (45-10.00) and 800m (1:52.74) events, respectively while sophomores Cherice Chugg (5,000m/19:40.86), Sam Nielson (javelin/38.26m [125-06]) and Kylie Hirschi (400m hurdles/1:00.60) all won their respective events. Freshman Rachel Orr cleared 1.70m (5-07.00) to win the high jump while fellow freshman Landon Watts crossed the finish line at 48.40 to win the 400m.
"Looking at the times, it seems like across the board we had a lot of improvements," Aggie veteran head coach Gregg Gensel said. "That is one of the things you want from a home meet - or anytime. Sometimes it is the only time parents get to see their kids perform along with people from the university and Cache Valley coming out to support our team. Rachel Orr is a good example. She does high jump for us along with playing for the USU volleyball team and almost the entire volleyball team was here to cheer her on. I thought that was pretty cool to see that kind of thing. That is what makes this meet special. Mark Faldmo, who this meet is named after, has contributed a lot to us over the years. We're grateful for his continuing support. This meet is wonderful in the sense of the timing of it. It's a good time for us to do really well and have some outstanding performances, and we did that today. Lindsey Spencer is a great example with the discus today and the hammer yesterday. She did a tremendous job. The distance runners have run pretty good. You've got to like that; that they keep getting better and better. And it seems to me that it's not always the same people that are getting better, so that means the team is getting better. I like that."
Former Aggie Zack Lloyd impressed the fans with a winning shot put toss of 20.51m (67-03.50) as an unattached athlete, to set a new track record at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
"Zack is a great athlete. It was fun to have him here when he was here as an athlete and to see him continue to do well is great. Anytime somebody comes in and breaks a track record, it's a great accomplishment," Gensel said.
Utah State's outdoor track and field season will continue as they travel to Berkley, Calif., for the Bruce Hamilton Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28. The 2012 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships will be held at the Dan O'Brien Track & Field Complex in Moscow, Idaho on Tuesday through Friday, May 8-11.
