MOSCOW, Idaho - Utah State men's track and field junior Jon Goble tallied 3,289 points after five of the 10 decathlon events to sit in second-place Tuesday, day one of the four day 2012 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Dan O'Brien Track & Field Complex in Moscow, Idaho.
Fellow junior Jordan McMurray is currently in fifth-place of the decathlon with 2,858 points, while senior John Johnson sits in sixth-place with 2,503 points. Freshman McKenzie Johnson is the only USU woman to compete in the heptathlon and she will head into the second day of competition with a point total of 2,610 which is good enough for seventh-place.
The multi-events will wrap up on Wednesday with action set to begin at 2 p.m. (MT). Field event finals, along with running event preliminaries and finals begin on Thursday with the meet set to conclude Friday evening. Goble was the highest placing Aggie in all five decathlon events Tuesday as he placed second in the 100m dash with a personal-best time of 11.19, while also placing second in the 400m (51.37) and shot put [11.01m (36-01.50)]. He also tied for third-place in the high jump with a leap of 1.78m (5-10.00) and took fourth-place in the long jump with a mark of 5.88m (19-03.50).
McKenzie Johnson set new personal-best marks in all four of the events she competed in as she placed fourth in the 400m (26.11), fifth in the 100m hurdles (15.39), seventh in the shot put [9.99m (32-09.50)] and ninth in the high jump clearing 1.39m (4-06.75).
Those who qualify will continue their season at the first round of the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas on May 24-26. The finals for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held on June 6-9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
