CLOVIS, Calif. -
Utah State freshman Talie Bonds is in fourth place in the women’s heptathlon following the first day of competition at the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Bonds sits in fourth with 3,233 points after placing first in the 100-meter hurdles (13.94 seconds), tying for third in the high jump (1.68m/5-06.00), taking seventh in the shot put (career-best 10.67m/35-00.25) and finishing fourth in the 200m (25.48).
“Talie ran really hard in the hurdles and backed it up with a really good high jump, and then had a PR in the shot put,” said USU multi-events/jumps coach Erik Rasmussen. “I can’t complain about any of those marks.”
Sophomore Niki Xydona is in seventh place with 2,972 points and junior Alyssa Hirschi is in 11th place with 2,780 points.
“Niki is looking the best she has looked since arriving at Utah State,” Rasmussen said. “Alyssa had a bit of a rough day, but she’s a tough competitor and she’ll have a much better day two.”
Xydona ran a personal-best 14.91 in the 100m hurdles, recorded a career-best mark of 1.65m (5-05.00) in the high jump and tallied a personal best of 25.57 in the 200m.
Day two of the MW Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin at 5 p.m. (MT) on Thursday with the final five events of the men’s decathlon, while the remaining three events of the heptathlon get under way at 5:30 p.m. The second day of competition concludes with the men’s 10,000-meter finals at 9:15 p.m., followed by the women’s 10,000m at 10 p.m.
“I am expecting to see some consistency with what they have been doing, but hope they will do something spectacular,” Rasmussen said of his heptathletes.
