BOISE, Idaho - Defending conference decathlon champion John Strang picked up right where he left off Wednesday, leading after the first day of action at the Western Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships at Bronco Stadium at Boise, Idaho.

Strang, a junior, who won the event last year with 6,770 points, amassed a personal best for the first day of the decathlon with 3,867 points Wednesday, winning three of the five events. He won the 100m with a 10.74 time, the long jump with a 23-9.50 mark and the high jump with a height of 6-8.75. Strang was also second in the 400m with a time of 50.68 and sixth in the shot put with a mark of 30-10.25.

"We were expecting him to be in the lead but he did even better than we expected because he got a new first day PR," USU head coach Gregg Gensel said of Strang's first-day personal best. "I think he's put himself in a good position and Logan Moore is in a good solid sixth so as long as everything goes normal tomorrow, we should be in good shape.

The shot put event was also won by a USU athlete as Moore, a senior who was the 2006 decathlon WAC champion, logged a winning mark of 37-2.5. Moore is in sixth-place after the first day with 2,536 points. He was fourth in the 400m (53.18), sixth in both the 100m (11.54) and high jump (5-7.25), and had a foul in the long jump.

On the women's side, senior Aimee Sauvageau is in seventh in the heptathlon with 2,728 points while sophomore Jennifer Schiess is ninth with 2,584 points. Sauvageau and Schiess tied each other for fourth in the high jump, both clearing 5-3.75. Sauvageau was also third in the shot put (34-11), seventh in the 100m hurdles (15.77) and 10th in the 200m (27.69). Schiess was eighth in both the 100m hurdles (16.02) and shot put (29-1.75) and ninth in the 200m (27.67).

"They're close to where we want them to be, they've done real solid today and are both in good solid position. We're excited about where they're at and what they can do tomorrow," Gensel said of USU's heptathletes.

Annett Wichmann of Hawai'i leads the heptathlon after the first day with 3,161 points.

The multi-events conclude on Thursday as the men finish the second half of the decathlon while the women finish the heptathlon with three events. The men will be competing in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1,500m run. The women will conclude action with the long jump, javelin and 800m run.

Friday's action commences with the field events at 12:30 p.m., opening with the men's hammer, while the running events get going at 2 p.m., led by the women's 3,000m steeplechase. Saturday's action starts at 12:30 p.m. with the field events, beginning with the women's hammer while the women's 4x100m relay opens the running events at 5 p.m.

Utah State's men's team is the defending WAC champion while the Aggie women were fifth last year. The USU men will be trying to become the first repeat conference men's champions under the current conference alignment and the first overall since BYU in 1998 and 1999. In the history of the WAC, there have been eight repeat champions, with some repeating more than two years, highlighted by BYU's nine in a row from 1985-93.
