Jan. 27, 2010
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's Brian McKenna has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, for the week of January 18-24, announced Wednesday by the conference office.
McKenna, a sophomore from Farmington, Utah (Viewmont HS), ran a personal-best time of 8:32.67 (converted from 8:35.37 for track size) to win the 3,000 meters at the Washington State Cougar Invitational in Pullman, Wash. The sophomore's time leads the WAC so far this season.
Boise State's Zacharias Arnos was the Field Athlete of the Week honoree.
This is McKenna's first WAC Track Athlete of the Week honor, after earning the award for cross country once during the fall, on the way to winning the WAC Cross Country Championship and earning the WAC Cross Country Male of the Year Award. McKenna is also the defending WAC champion in the 10,000m and was named the WAC Freshman of the Year last season.
McKenna and the USU men's and women's track and field teams' next action will be at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Boise State on Jan. 30. Boise State is also the host of the 2010 WAC Indoor Championships Feb. 25-27.
The Aggies, the defending men's outdoor WAC champions, will host their lone meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational, on Saturday, April 17 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
