USU Track & Field's Chari Hawkins Named Co-Mountain West Track and Field Athlete of the Week

Utah State track & field athlete Chari Hawkins has been named the Co- Mountain West Track and Field Athlete of the Week for meets held Jan. 21-27, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday. She shares the honor with San Diego State's Jasmine Burrell.
It is the first time in Utah State's history that an Aggie has been named Mountain West Track & Field Athlete of the week, after joining the conference this season. It also marks the second time in Hawkins' career that she has been named conference athlete-of-the-week. The multi-events athlete was also awarded WAC Athlete of the Week honors last outdoor season.
Hawkins, a junior from Rexburg, Idaho, set a new school record and placed third in the pentathlon with 3,965 points at the New Mexico hosted Cherry & Silver Invitational last weekend. The previous record of 3,914 points was set by Lacey Schroeder in 2006. Hawkins' previous best in the pentathlon was 3,719 points, set in 2011. Furthermore, Hawkins moved up to sixth-place in USU history with her jump of 5.76m in the long jump portion of the pentathlon.
Hawkins' pentathlon score ranks first in the Mountain West this season and sixth in the nation. Hawkins also holds the top-mark in the high jump this season, that mark is also tied for 15th best in the nation. Additionally, the Gem State native ranks fourth in the long jump and fifth in the 60m hurdles in the Mountain West.
