LOGAN, Utah – Utah State sprinter AJ Boully has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week, for the period ending on Sunday, Feb. 26, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
It is the second time this year and third time in Boully’s career that he has been named USU’s student-athlete of the week.
The native of Boise, Idaho, earned all-conference honors in three events last weekend at the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships, held in Albuquerque, N.M. Boully won both the 400m and 4x400-meter relay titles with times of 46.48 and 3:09.21, respectively, while also placing third in the 60-meter hurdles, recording a personal-best time of 7.85, which ranks second all-time in school history. Overall, Boully helped USU place third as a team with 110.5 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL – Freshman guard Sam Merrill (Bountiful, Utah) recorded career highs in both games as Utah State went 2-0 in Mountain West play last week with an 81-75 road win at San José State, followed by an 89-58 home win against Air Force. Against the Spartans, Merrill scored a career-high 22 points, shooting 9-of-12 from the floor, and led the Aggies with six rebounds, five assists and a career-high-tying three steals. Against the Falcons, Merrill was one of three Aggies in double figures with 12 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor, to go along with a career-high nine assists. Merrill also recorded two rebounds and one steal against Air Force. For the week, Merrill averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the floor, 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from behind the 3-point line and 100.0 percent (4-of-4) at the free throw line.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – Sophomore guard Rachel Brewster (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) helped Utah State to a 1-1 Mountain West record last week with an 82-78 home win against San José State and a 64-61 road loss at Air Force. Against the Spartans, Brewster tied her career-high with 22 points. She also added six rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Against the Falcons, Brewster tallied 11 points, while adding five rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. On the week, Brewster averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting 36.1 percent (13-of-36) from the field, 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from the 3-point line and 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from the free throw line.
GYMNASTICS – Sophomore Madison Ward (Rexburg, Idaho) tied for third on floor with a career-high-tying 9.900 this past weekend at the Nebraska-hosted Masters Classic, which also featured the 15th-ranked Cornhuskers, No. 19 California and Southeast Missouri. The Aggies placed third in the quad meet with a season-high road score of 196.200, which is the seventh-best score in program history and the third-highest road score. Ward also placed 21st on vault (9.600) and tied for eighth on bars (9.825) at the Masters Classic. In last Monday's tri-meet at fourth-ranked UCLA, Ward placed third on floor with a 9.875, helping the Aggies place second with a 195.700. She also tied for 12th on vault (9.700) and tied for seventh on bars (9.800).
SOFTBALL – Senior pitcher April Brown (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) helped Utah State to a 3-1 record last week at the UC Riverside-hosted Amy S. Harrison Classic, as it began the tournament with a 7-5 loss to UTEP, followed by a 5-1 win against Siena, a 5-1 win against UC Riverside and a 4-1 win against UTEP. Brown pitched two complete games on the weekend as she posted wins against Siena and UTEP. In her seven innings against the Saints, Brown allowed one hit and one run, while striking out six batters and walking five. Against UTEP, Brown held the Miners to two hits and one unearned run. She threw a career-high 10 strikeouts while walking three batters. On the week, Brown posted a 2-0 record with a 0.50 ERA. She allowed three hits and two runs in her two appearances, while striking out 16 batters and walking eight.
WOMEN’S TENNIS – Senior Nini Guensler (Tbilisi, Georgia) posted a 2-1 overall record in singles and doubles last week as Utah State split a pair of matches in Spokane, Wash., defeating Montana (5-2) and falling to Gonzaga (6-1). Against the Grizzlies, Guensler and junior Sabrina Demerath won at the second doubles position, 6-0. Then, in singles, Guensler won at the No. 1 spot in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). Guensler’s doubles match was left unfinished against Gonzaga before she fell at the No. 1 spot.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Sophomore Brenn Flint (Syracuse, Utah) earned all-conference honors as she placed second in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 15.40m (50-6.25) last weekend at the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships, held in Albuquerque, N.M. Flint's toss of 15.40m (50-6.25) ranks second all-time in school history. Overall, Flint helped USU place ninth as a team with 42 points.
