LOGAN, Utah – Junior distance runner Dillon Maggard qualified and will represent Utah State track & field in the men’s mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, in College Station, Texas.
“Nationals is the final test and it’s everything you work for,” said Maggard. “It’s where you get to measure how good you really are, so it’s a great opportunity. This time around I have a lot more mileage and I’m better prepared. It’s really a dream come true. Competing in college and going to nationals was always a goal of mine, and I never thought it was possible to go this many times. I thought maybe I would be able to go to nationals my senior year, but not this many times, so it’s awesome.”
Maggard earned All-American honors at last year’s indoor championships, placing 12th with a time of 4:10.13 in the mile. The junior also earned honorable mention All-American accolades in the outdoor season, finishing 23rd in the 1,500m with a time of 3:52.80. Maggard recently completed the trifecta, earning All-American honors during this past cross country season, placing 12th overall with a time of 30:03.9 in the men’s 10-kilometer race at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Championships.
“Last year Dillon figured out what he needed to do to be a good runner, and to his credit he’s been able to do that,” said veteran USU head coach Gregg Gensel. “It’s been wonderful to watch his development. I’m excited to watch him run next week because he’ll have a couple of national meets under his belt and some experience that will help him be an even a better runner.”
This marks the fourth consecutive year that an Aggie athlete has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The native of Kirkland, Wash., continues his indoor season after earning all-conference honors by finishing runner-up in both the mile (4:07.78) and the distance medley relay (9:49.24) at the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships last weekend in Albuquerque, N.M.
Maggard’s converted mile time of 3:58.23 ranks 13th in the nation this season. Maggard set the school record in the mile earlier this year at the Washington Invitational with a time of 4:01.68, beating the previous record of 4:02.17 set 19 years ago.
