LOGAN, Utah – Junior Dillon Maggard will represent USU track & field at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships by competing in the men’s mile, Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, In College Station, Texas.

The men’s mile preliminaries will begin on Friday at 4:45 p.m. (MT), with the finals on the following day at 3:10 p.m. (MT).

Maggard earned second-team All-American honors at last year’s indoor championships, placing 12th with a time of 4:10.13 in the mile. The junior also earned honorable mention All-American accolades during the outdoor season, finishing 23rd in the 1,500m with a time of 3:52.80. Maggard recently completed the trifecta, earning All-American honors during the past cross country season, placing 12th overall with a time of 30:03.9 in the men’s 10-kilometer race at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Championships.

“My closing kick is much better and so is my endurance because of all the mileage I’ve done,” said Maggard. “I’ve also gradually been adding to my mileage, and having a good cross country season helped transfer the endurance I’ve gained into the track season.”

The native of Kirkland, Wash., looks to continue his indoor success after earning all-conference honors by finishing runner-up in both the mile (4:07.78) and distance medley relay (9:49.24) at the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

The three-time All-American has a passion for running and every aspect of his life seems sweeter when he runs.

“I started to run in high school because the quality of life was just better when I ran,” said Maggard. “Life felt and tasted better and running was just really therapeutic for me. Obviously, competition drives you as a runner, but I’m not going to be able to compete forever, so the primal state of living is what keeps me running.”

Maggard’s converted mile time of 3:58.23 seeded him 13th for the national meet. Maggard set the school record in the mile earlier this year at the Washington Invitational with a time of 4:01.68, beating the previous record of 4:02.17 set 19 years ago.

Maggard looks forward to running against a familiar crowd and he can earn his second-straight indoor All-American honor by placing in the top 16.

“I’ve raced a lot of the same guys during the indoor season and in cross country, as well,” said Maggard. “Cross country gave me a lot of confidence because I know I can beat most of the same runners in a 10-kilometer race. The mile is a completely different race, but as far as strength goes, I feel like I have an edge on them. The championship race is very tactical, starting the first 800m really slow, then closing the second 800m really fast, but that’s just how it is.”

ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 10 starting at 4:25 p.m. (MT) and March 11 starting at 2:55 p.m. (MT). Additionally, a television network login is required to view the events live. A re-air of the championship will take place on Sunday, March 12, starting at 5 p.m. (MT) on ESPN2 and also Friday, March 17, starting at noon (MT) on ESPNU.
