LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's men and women's track and field teams will split action Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, at New Mexico's Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. and at the 38th running of the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
Action at the Don Kirby Invitational will begin Friday with the women's hammer throw at 4 p.m. (MT) and conclude with the men's hammer throw at 5:30 p.m. Saturday will kick off with the women's javelin and men's shot put at 9:30 a.m. and is set to end with the women's and men's 4x400m relays at 5:20 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively. All times subject to change.
At the Stanford Invitational, five Aggies will compete in the distance running events at Cobb Track on Friday, including seniors Daniel Howell, Kim Quinn and Aaron Clements, along with junior Stephanie Burt and sophomore Hannah Williams.
Live results and a live broadcast with event coverage and interviews will be available for fans to follow the Stanford Invitational by clicking on the "live results" and "watch live" links on www.utahstateaggies.com.
"The Stanford Invitational gives our athletes a chance to run and compete with great quality competition like Stanford always provides," said USU veteran head coach Gregg Gensel. "The New Mexico Invite is also a good meet that is growing and it is gives us good chance to have our athletes improve. It is only our second year going to their outdoor meet but we are excited about the quality of competition there."
Due to the time difference and late event start times, all results from the Stanford Invitational on Friday will be included with Saturday's release. Friday's men and women's hammer results from the Don Kirby Invitational will also be included in Saturday's release.
The Aggie women rank sixth in the Mountain Region while the men sit at No. 7 according to the most recent rankings released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Additionally, USU has three athletes rank in the top 25 in the nation of their respective events including Howell with the 17th-best time in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:04.37). Senior Sonia Grabowska cleared 4.06m (13-03.75) to rank 25th in the pole vault, while fellow senior Lindsey Spencer ranks eighth in the discus [53.10m (174-02)] and 12th in the hammer throw [60.30m (197-10)]. With the marks, Spencer set new school records in each event.
The 2012 outdoor season will continue as the Aggies will travel to Sacramento, Calif., for the Sacramento State Invite on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14. Utah State track and field will host its lone home meet of the season, the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21 at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium.
