Sindri Gudmundsson Named Both America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week And Mountain West Men's Field Athlete of the Week
LOGAN, Utah – Utah State redshirt freshman thrower Sindri Gudmundsson has been named the Mountain West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, as well as the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week, for all competition held through Sunday, April 9.

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State redshirt freshman thrower Sindri Gudmundsson has been named the Mountain West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, as well as the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week, for all competition held through Sunday, April 9.

It is the first time this year and first time in Gudmundsson's career that he has been named USU’s student-athlete of the week. It also marks the second time this year and second time in his career that he has earned Mountain West weekly accolades.

The native of Kopavogur, Iceland, won the javelin and broke his own school record with a mark of 73.06m (239-8.25) last weekend at the UCLA-hosted Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. His mark in the javelin ranks first in the Mountain West and eighth in the nation this season. Also, his javelin mark ranks second all-time in Mountain West history.

The Mountain West Outdoor Championships will be held in Logan, Utah, on May 10-13, just 12 days before the First Round of the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, on May 25-27.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:

SOFTBALL – Senior shortstop Sarina Jarmillo (West Covina, Calif.), helped Utah State to a 2-1 home record last week as the Aggies fell to No. 22 BYU (8-6) before sweeping a double-header against Fresno State (1-0, 7-4). Against BYU, Jaramillo led the team as she went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a home run. She had three RBIs in the game, while adding one putout and four assists. In the first game against Fresno State, Jaramillo gave the Aggies the win with a walk-off home run. Overall, she was 1-for-3 at the plate against the Bulldogs, adding one putout and three assists, defensively. In the second game of the doubleheader, Jaramillo was 1-for-2 at the plate, with one home run and one walk. She scored two runs and added two RBIs, and matched her career-high with four putouts and had two assists. On the week, Jaramillo hit a team-high .444 (4-of-9) with three home runs and one double. She also had six RBIs and scored four runs. Defensively, she tallied six putouts and nine assists, while committing one error.

MEN’S TENNIS –
Sophomore Jonas Maier (Hamburg, Germany) posted a 5-2 overall record in singles and doubles last week to guide Utah State to a 3-1 home record with wins against Saint Mary’s (4-0), Weber State (5-2) and Air Force (4-1), while losing to New Mexico (4-3). Against the Gaels, Maier teamed up with senior Jack Swindells to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 win. Against the Wildcats, Maier and Swindells won in doubles at the first position, 6-2, before he won his singles match in straight sets at the No. 5 spot (6-4, 6-2). Against the Falcons, Maier and Swindells again clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the first position, before Maier dropped his singles match. And against the Lobos, Maier and Swindells lost their doubles match, but Maier won in straight sets at the No. 6 spot (7-5, 6-1).

WOMEN’S TENNIS – Freshman Hannah Jones (South Ogden, Utah) posted a 2-1 overall record last week in Utah State’s two road losses against New Mexico (5-2) and Air Force (5-2). Against the Lobos, Jones won in singles at the No. 6 spot in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 3-1, ret). And against the Falcons, Jones lost a doubles match, but won her singles match at the No. 5 spot in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Junior Tylee Newman-Skinner (Monteview, Idaho) won the 1,500m with a time of 4:27.57 last weekend at the UCLA-hosted Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. Her 1,500m time ranks seventh in the Mountain West this season.
