LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior cross country runner Dillon Maggard has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week, for the period ending Sunday, April 16, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
It is the seventh time this year and eighth time in Maggard’s career that he has been named USU’s student-athlete of the week.
The native of Kirkland, Wash., placed fifth with a school-record time of 13:41.17 in the 5,000m last weekend at the 59th annual Mt. SAC Relays. His 5,000m time ranks second in the Mountain West and seventh in the nation this season.

SOFTBALL – Senior pitcher April Brown (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) helped Utah State to a 2-1 Mountain West road record last week at Colorado State (6-2, 4-0, 0-3). Brown started the second game against the Rams, throwing the complete game. She allowed three hits and zero runs in the win, tallying nine strikeouts and walking four batters. In the series finale, Brown pitched the final two innings of relief work, without allowing a hit or a run. On the weekend, Brown posted a 0.00 ERA and a 1-0 record in eight innings of work, striking out nine batters and walking four.
MEN’S GOLF – Junior Braxton Miller (Boise, Idaho) shot a final round of 2-over-par 74 to finish tied for 24th place at 1-over 217 at the Wyoming-hosted Cowboy Classic held last week in Chandler, Ariz. Miller began the tournament with a 1-under 71, which was his fifth round under par this season and the 16th of his career, before carding rounds of 72 and 74 during his final 36 holes. USU finished the tournament tied for 11th place out of 18 teams with a 15-over 879 (292-293-294).
MEN’S TENNIS – Junior Kai Wehnelt (Berlin, Germany) posted a 3-0 mark in singles and doubles last week to guide No. 42 Utah State to a pair of Mountain West road wins at Fresno State (4-1) and at Nevada (5-0). Against the Bulldogs, Wehnelt teamed with sophomore Samuel Serrano for a 6-4 win at the first doubles position to clinch the doubles point. Against the Wolf Pack, Wehnelt and Serrano again clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the first position. Then, Wehnelt was the first off the courts in singles with a straight sets win at the No. 1 spot (6-3, 6-2).
WOMEN’S TENNIS – Senior Nini Guensler (Tbilisi, Georgia) posted a 3-0 mark in singles and doubles last week to guide Utah State to a 1-1 home record with a 4-2 loss against Utah and a 4-0 win against Idaho. Against the Utes, Demerath teamed up with junior Sabrina Demerath for a 6-2 win at the second position. Then, Guensler won at the No. 1 singles spot as she forced her opponent to retire while Guensler was leading in the third set (2-6, 6-4, 3-0). Against the Vandals, Guensler and Demerath picked up a 6-1 win at the second position to clinch the doubles point.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD – Sophomore Cierra Simmons (Soda Springs, Idaho) broke Utah State's 3,000m steeplechase record as she placed 12th with a time of 10:12.52 last weekend at the 59th annual Mt. SAC Relays. Simmon's steeplechase time ranks third in the Mountain West and 12th in the nation this season.
