LOGAN, Utah – Utah State senior javelin thrower Devin Wright was recently named a finalist for the NCAA Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship.
The NCAA established the Walter Byers Scholarship in 1988 as a means of recognizing the contributions of the former executive director through encouraging excellence in academic performance by student-athletes.
Annually, one male and one female student-athlete are awarded a $24,000 Walter Byers scholarship in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in graduate study. It is intended that an individual named a Byers Scholar will be recognized as one who has combined the best elements of mind and body to achieve national distinction for his or her achievements, and promises to be a future leader in his or her chosen field of career service.
Wright is one of six finalists who will be interviewed at the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind., on April 30 through May 1, for this prestigious award. Additionally, the committee will award a scholarship to one female and one male out of the group of six finalists.
Just to be considered for the Walter Byers Scholarship is a great honor, and all of the finalists will receive a plaque to pay tribute to this accomplishment.
“I feel deeply humbled to be considered for the honor of being named an NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship finalist,” said Wright. “When I applied I thought it was a long shot, and being named a finalist is an indication of the tremendous opportunities I have had at Utah State, and throughout my life. Being named the winner would be amazing, but either way I feel deeply honored to be recognized by the NCAA."
Wright is no stranger to academic achievements and leadership opportunities. The senior has collected numerous academic accolades, which include academic all-Mountain West, MW Scholar Athlete, CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII and third-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Wright also received the A-Pin award for the college of science, where recipients are required to maintain a 4.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters, while taking at least 15 graded credit hours.
Wright is also involved in the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He serves as Utah State’s SAAC president, as well as the SAAC Mountain West representative.
